One of my new favorite locomotives is the Palmetto Brick Railroad Plymouth(s). Unfortunately (I think) the RR closed early this year. If you research it at all it is pretty interesting- it is/was a 1.5 mile span of track from the plant to the clay pits. They have two 36" gauge Plymouths to move the side dump cars. It is a "push, pull" operation that uses link-and-pin couplers! It is/was said to be the last RR of it's kind in the USA.

I'm feeling the inspiration!
Okay as for the Davenport check this out: http://www.northeast.railfan.net/diesel97.html
There's a series of books called--fittingly enough--"Critters." I think it's put out by Maine 2-foot Quarterly, but I could be wrong. Lots of inspiration there. As for size, pick'em. You might also Google "Davenport" or "Plymouth," as they made a number of small "critter"-esque diesels.

Wow! Those are pretty cool, but I am looking for diesel critters

Say there was a 3' narrow gauge critter locomotive. What would the dimensions probably be?
