How do you build a Wye in G Scale?
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, June 9, 2004 11:12 PM
I have never build a "wye," can one be built and what type of track configuration would one need with Aristo type components? Electrical Engineering?

I don't see myself building a turn table for my locos at this time, can a "wye" be built in the meantime?

I hope this makes sense to y'all.
Thanks,

Hi Joe,
3 switches and flexi track would be my thoughts on a single track. The electrics would be on direct short so it would have to be in isolated blocks and I would use a seperate controller to control it or have a switch in the track feed to divert the power to the 'Y' when needed. Need quite a bit of room as well.
Cheers,
Kim

Hi Joe
I know of one done in a tight spot using LGB track it did involve a little bit of cutting
I have your Email still I think so i will try and send it to you with the oictures and Email that explained what plain tracks are cut.
You should be able to find aristo craft equivelent tracks.
you will have to find some one who can explain the wiring of it I cannot remember how it is done and the guy that built the "Y" doesn't use track power

Hey Guys,
That would be neat to see. Now you have me thinking. My Brother-In-Law was over the other day and asked how long before we would be getting rid of the kid's play structure. I figured they would use it for another two or so years. Next he said "Then the next thing you will do expand the railroad...right???" The way time flies around here means expansion will come quick. That would be the perfect area for a wye. Hmmmm....always something to add isn't there? Later eh...Brian.

Gentlemen and Rene from; he who has an opinion on evrything.

I have thought of building a wye myself and what Kim said is right on the money.

Our club secretary has actually built one; I'm pretty sure out of LGB components. His name is Colin Everitt and of you like I will give you his email adress; if you are serious about it at this stage. He can be a bit of a crusty person from time to time, so I would get his permission first.

What I do have instead is an LGB MTS reversing loop, which is quite fantastic and I'm in the process of starting another but at the other end of my layout but in the reverse direction, if you don't understand this think about it fotr a while. If you want to go from clockwise to anticlockwise, would mean a different facing reversing loop, than if you wi***o go from anticlockwise to clockwise or else you would have to go through it in reverse and some big trains do not like that; in the one I have.

Joe I have a photo's of real life ones if you like and the big problem with all wyes is the room they take up.

Brian; how could you be so cruel to you daughter, she is only 5 and you are thinking about taking away her play area, next I will hear that you are going to eat Bambi. Kim has already eaten Skippy!

Ian,
Already eaten Bambi....As for "HER" play area...that is quickly becoming MY workshop! What ever I build now she has to make too. If I am working in the garden she will use the swing for two minutes and then join in. Don't worry, it will never come down without her permission! Later eh...Brian.

Capt
I had a wye for couple of years , and found I did not use it that much. That was when I was track powered. ( the toggle switches was in a building) Battery power makes it really easy. now i don't have a wye cause a reverse loop works better cause we turn the whole train around. just a thought.

Is it REAL? or Just 1:29 scale?

Thanks,

I am just considering making a "wye" since I am yet to lay down significant track outside. I need to make sure that I reserve the proper track, switches et al before I finalize my track plan.

In the end I may have to rig up some kind of turntable, it seems the quickest and most space effective way.

Again, thanks...

If you e-mail me your address I'd be glad to draw it out and how to wire it. I can't do drawings on the puter. cozy6z@yahoo.com
Mine was simple any one can run type of wiring.

Yes, Thank you.

Sorry I haven't responded, I am doing an Historian's Seminar at a local college this week and a one at the Corpus Christi Museum of History next week and I have got behind on my e-corespondence.

It was as I expected, it seems that I may not have the room for a "wye," I may have to make a "turning" loop and or give in a build a make-shift turn table.

Thanks Again,

Hi Captain Carrales
Phew! Thank goodness was begining to think an electronic spam muncher had got it.
Right now the bit I forgot to tell you.OOPS!! Sorry
The train in the picture is not very big the back two wagons (cars) are playmobile which makes them the same size as the LGB 4 wh wagons
the shunters float the front one is scratch built not sure but a lot shorter.
The locomotive again scratch built,
the orange box up front (think Toby the tram of Thomas the tank engine fame) is about the same length as a LGB 4wh car may be just a fraction larger. so the "Y" in the picture is tiny.
My last effort at trying to put up pictures failed so I sent straight to you.
regards.John

Not tryn to get off topic but why are the turn tables so $$$$$
Which I could buy many trains and stock with that money.

Hi Bluebonnet -71
Dont know why it droped the message
but it said.
The manufacturer wants his tooling costs and prrofit on an item that costs as much as a locomotive to produce but has less turnover.

A wye does not have to look like a Y, it can come off a curve and split off into a corner also.
Heres my old one

The U.P. unit is sitting on the Y. the mainline curve is to the left out of the photo.
The track at the bottom is the line going into the shop storage tracks.

We have had a Japanese sounding member of our local club build a turntable out of I think an old phonograph turntable. but Joe don't forget this will only turn the engine not the entire train, unless you have really big one, say 2m in diametre.

If you wi***o build a reversing loop, don't forget that it is nearly impossible to do so without some fancy elctronics, for electrical reasons; ie a loop produces a short circuit and it is tough to overcome. This is why I am so enamoured with the LGB MTS one I have. I connected it up as per the diagram and it works so well and so completely (I'll explain in detail if anyone wants an explanation of this) that you don't even know you have it.

The business about clockwise etc is more important than you would think, if you enter it from both directions you end up with a wye a fancy one it's true but still a wye.

I any case when I get around to it I'll send you a photo of a real one at Thornebury Qld, Oz

Rgs Captain Kangaroo..
