There was a rather extensive discussion of smoke fluids on these forums a couple of years ago.  Some members, one of whom was a chemist, reported that even mineral oil from a neighborhood pharmacy could be used as smoke fluid in some brands.  We use mineral oil in a Micro-Mark fan-driven smoke generator on an HO scale club layout where we have an IRS building on fire.  The mineral oil smokes just as well as any commercial smoke fluid, and is certainly much cheaper.

 Yes. You can use regular old lamp oil too

Can I use smoke fluid from an (Lionel) O gauge starter set with LGB engines? The number on the bottle says 6-2909 if that helps.
