LGB MTS and track length?
Posted by Chopperthedog on Thursday, February 11, 2010 2:24 PM

night time!

my door my layout

so here is my layout as of current. 26x50 about 140 feet of track. lgb mts controlled with 55005 central station and 55090 booster. turnouts also controlled via mts. track is floating on 4" of 3/8" granite chip with rail clamps. 12 gauge wire under rail connected every 8' to 10' and layout is divided in half and insulated. i use no smoke or sound units. and have been able to run both trains in picture (dash9 and sd45) plus an alco s4 and a gp38 at the same time. at this point grass in middle has been killed and cedar mulch laid making room for expansion and some plants. so here is the question. is there a track length maximum that can be used with the central station/booster ? google seemed to be no help no matter how i worded it. thanks in advance.

Toby: I hope I understand your question correctly. I think you are asking how long your track can be when powered from one central power station? You say you are using 12-gage wire with feeders every 8-10 feet. In my two cents I’m going to say that if you stay in your backyard you will have no problems. If you have good solid connections with your wiring I wouldn’t worry about it until you reach a quarter mile of wire from the supply point.

Almost forgot the important part:  Welcome to the forum.

I know of one hobbyist that has 1,000 ft. of track using MTS and it's been only after 6 years of use that he is thinking of using railclamps. It floats in ballast like yourself.

I agree, good connections, "snubbers" on long "dead ends", twist the wires a bit, and you can make something the size of a football field.

Thank You so much for the welcome ttrigg. And thank You for the real world answers. i will be moving forward with expansion 2010 and not have to worry about expanding my current power situation.
