Hi Dave,
We keep our sliders on at the Fair in Pomona, but that's because the trains we run are rather long. All we do is bend the ends upward so that they do catch on anything: frogs, gaps, etc. If you don't want to pull them out, this is an option that we do and ever since I haven't had a derail from them since.
Hope that helps,
Mark
See you at Fairplex. 5 years and going strong!
First, you can fix your Aristo Wide Radius switches, they might need the new frogs ($1 each from Aristo) and they will need shimming of the guard rails. See my site for details under TRACK...
Second, regauge your USAT locos to the proper back to back gauge.
I never had any problems in this area once I had these changes.
I don't like the sliders... I swapped out the traction tired axles for "solid" ones and pulled the sliders.
Read my pages on USAT locos.
The locos will not pull as much because of losing the traction tires, BUT my experience is that the incidences of "cracked axles" went to zero afterwards.
That's the short story...
Regards, Greg

How well will engins run without them? I am thinking of removing them since THEY are the main cause of derailments on my Aristo wide switchs. Or is there FIX to keep them from falling in the switch?
Dave
