Concret Blocks, come in 6X16, 8X16, and 12X12 all about 1.5 inchs thick. The $$ are $0.84 to $2.00 each. faster easyer way of doing it.

Like Tom said, your forms must be true and level. A larger flat trowel will make it easier to work the concrete flat. Make your concrete pretty stiff (not too soupy). Irregularities can be fixed with a skim coat of vinyl concrete patcher.

Howdy Jason; I use Hardy concrete backer board for building bases. I cut the boad to size and lay it on a leveled screened sand or DG base.

Step 1. Ensure your forms are level and true, and at least 3 inches deep.
Step 2. Fill form with concrete (I use fence post dry mix, pour the concrete into the hole dry then add water.)
Step 3. Insert stick and shake to tamp down the larger rocks so that the finer particles rise to the surface.
Step 4. Use float trowel to smooth the surface.
Step 5. Sprinkle some dry cement (about ΒΌ cup per square foot) across the surface and work it in with the trowel.
Step 6. (Optional) Cover with very wet piece of fabric, and keep it wet. Fine close weave material will give texture similar to "scale texture" surface of the real item.

I'm interested in building a concrete platform for a mixed-and-matched Piko brewery complex of mine. Does anyone know how I can get the concrete to stay flat and level, like a foundation should be? When I've tried making concrete pads in the past, they always had irregularities.
