Brass is by far the easiest to use if you are building a "plate frame" type of bogie and building an arch ar type requires some precise bending -but what you bend is up to you(!)

Have a look around my homepage -especially the section marked "Kitchen Sink Engineering" -in fact anything on a brown background would help I think?

Can and how do you build your own trucks? Also what material(s) do you use?

That answer depends entirely upon your working skills.

If you are an experienced metal worker, you could do it in brass by cutting several different “layers” to build it up.

Styrene can be used the same way, cut out several different layers and glue them up.

Casting: After you build one side (metal or styrene) you could make you own rubber mold and just start mass producing identical side frames. (If you use a “retail” truck for a master to cast you will end up with copyright and patent violation problems.)

If you have wood carving skills, you could spend a few hours and have a set carved out of wood.

I would say the answer to this question is to use what ever medium you feel comfortable working in.
