Hi   K       By chipping I mean installing R/C or DCC    loads of people do LGB but no one seems to want to do Bachmann

The cost of B-Mann vs the cost of Chipping would be the driving factor for me

I'm not on that side of the pond, but what do you mean by "chipping" the locomotive? Logic tells me it involves installing electronics, not putting them through a very large shredder/mulcher, though the visual is somewhat amusing. ("NO, that's NOT how you kitbash!!!")
