No experience in hand laying but C&O C Ry. sells ME ones - http://www.cocry.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=COCR&Category_Code=MICROE-G

I have read that steel is better than stainless ones as the rust helps hold the spikes in place.

SwitchCrafters has composite ties, spikes and a nifty spiking tool - http://www.switchcrafters.com/cgi-bin/ez-catalog/cat_display.cgi?account=X381875;search=;search=;limit=category;v=2.0
