MTH protocouplers on USA SD40-2
Posted by enginear on Wednesday, July 15, 2009 11:54 AM

Well I have been building up on my new O gauge stuff and not much with G gauge. I had an USA Trains SD40-2 that is basically brand new. It has had a couple of different systems inside of it and now its going of to Raymond's for PS2 install. I thought before it left that I would install MTH protocouplers on it. I love the ability to drop off cars anywhere on the layout. Here's some shots of the mods necessary for installing them. First I removed the KDs that I had previously installed. The factory mount is on the left. I had to grind down an area on the original mount to get the coupler to proper height. I drilled the existing hole bigger with a 1/4" forsner bit. Its the modified one in the middle. I also grinded the coupler down a bit so the hole was not so deep.

The coupler is now shown on the right in it's mounting position on the modified factory mount.

When I went to install I found that it rubbed the pilot and was not high enough so with a tad of grinding down (actually up) the pilot:

I figure with MTH's DCS catching on to more people, they will want to convert some of their existing roster. Joe
