In 1987 at the NMRA Convention at Eugene, Oregon I introduced myself to Hal Carstens asking about writing an article. He introduced me to Phyllis and after some conversation she gave me a phone number and told me to call it when I got back to Sacramento. I was surprised when Bill Schaumburg answered the phone. When I told him what happened he said, “I better talk to you she’s the boss’s wife.” We talked for sometime and that was the beginning of my writing career.

I’m saddened to hear of Hal Carstens passing and offer my condolences to the Carstens family.

While this isn't large-scale specific news, Hal Carstens was a hobby pioneer in many ways. This is the article Classic Toy Trains put on their web site: http://www.trains.com/ctt/default.aspx?c=a&id=1917
