Paint Mixing and Matching
Posted by Bobbercee on Tuesday, April 21, 2009 4:34 PM

Dear folks,

I am trying to match the paint color on the Aristo Eggliner "Southern" model. It is a dark green. I haven't done this before and I would like any suggestions on how to mix paint to match this color (or mixing suggestions in general). I have an airbrush and can use Polly S or Floquil paints or other sprayable brand. Any help you can offer a novice at this operation would be greatlly appreciated. I am a member of the Florida Garden Railway Society, Tampa Bay Division.

Thanks,

Bobbercee

Hi Bob    Its trial and error    just mix colours to what you think you want, put it on a bit of plastic let it dry.  If to light then make it darker or vice verser. I had to try 10 differant matches before mine was 99.9 correct      Hope this helps

Howdy Bob, from an artist perspective I would buy a bottle of Floquil Southern Green. Floquil is an oil base paint and can be applied over oil or acrylic. If the green isn’t dark enough you can mix in a dark blue (green is blue and yellow) or mix in greens complementary color, red. If the green is to dark add bright yellow. I would not add white as it makes green look chalky. It helps to check your color match by looking at your sample and original side by side through a small hole, as in binder paper.

Hope this helps, Rob

Thank you to those who posted suggestions. I will have to track down (pun intended) a source for the Floquil paint. I often buy from Micro-Mark but they don't have a complete range of colors. We don't have a large train store in this area. However, I will try to find it and give a shot at mixing the paint.

 Thanks, Bob
