Obviously safety should be a concern especially with children. Models with white metal castings should not be around children at all whether painted or blacken. White metal usually contains a fair amount of lead. These castings are usually of a delicate nature also and children usually are not.

I have done a bit of experimenting and comparison of various reagents including a homemade one. I posted an article on my results on my blog - http://www.grblogs.com/index.php/2009/02/23/metal-blackening?blog=25 .If anyone is coming to York in March and would like some of the chemicals, send me a message.-Brian
