 Brian,

On a personal note I have never been in favor of "Metal Blackening". I prefer to use paint -this is because of small children... I still paint my models in "edible" paints despite the fact that most of the children in my house are way past the chewing phase(!)

regards

Obviously safety should be a concern especially with children. Models with white metal castings should not be around children at all whether painted or blacken. White metal usually contains a fair amount of lead. These castings are usually of a delicate nature also and children usually are not.

Metal Blackening

I have done a bit of experimenting and comparison of various reagents including a homemade one. I posted an article on my results on my blog - http://www.grblogs.com/index.php/2009/02/23/metal-blackening?blog=25 .
If anyone is coming to York in March and would like some of the chemicals, send me a message.
