Well, I would say that we have accomplished my goal. I have made some very good friends here, albiet we have never met. And, one more thing, I went to some of the other trains.com forums and missed greatly (with the possible exception of the Classic Trains Forum) the friendship of this forum.

The 7eighth list generates 40-60 posts per day, the 1:20.3 list 10-20 and the G-scale group a couple dozen daily. Admittedly the scratchbuilders group I originally referred to is very quiet. You can set your yahoo preferences to eliminate the ads, or attachments, if you prefer. The 7/8 list is all scratchbuilding, allows photo attachments and some of the modelling is remarkable.
I'd also suggest checking the other LargeScale sites, in particular http://www.mylargescale.com and http://www.largescalecentral.com Both have very active forums (fora?) with emphasis on scratchbuilding

PS, if you have checked my URL you will see that I scratchbuild just about everything

Phil,

At one time (two years or so ago) I was subscribing to 12+ YAHOO groups (from N to LS and plenty of DCC).
What I "rattle on about" has nothing to do with the moderators, it is intrinsic to the YAHOO group format!
Been there, done that, don't feel I need the grieve.[;)]

I'm looking forward to what will develop here.
Cheers HJ http://www.rhb-grischun.ca/ http://www.easternmountainmodels.com

It would be listed just after the existing forums. That way we could address these issues here where we are already posting. Whad'ya think? Anyone else? Later eh...Brian.

Brian,

Sounds good!

As some of us know YAHOO Groups is "the world's crappiest format" not to subject oneself to unless one enjoys an endless supply of pop-up ads, threads that can not be scrolled through, posting pictures in a gallery which has no relation to the thread etc. etc. plus last but not least, plenty of SPAM that will originate right from within YAHOO (unless everyone is on the ball and reads all the disclaimers and checks all the DO NOT send check boxes). [}:)][;)][:)][:)]

Hey I know all about it, afterall I signed up for a yahoo.ca address so that those guys get the privilege to process all their own SPAM junk plus everything that gets generated from similar sources.
Seems to work well and I waste less time (only 2 groups to check once a month), oh yeah the "once a month" is an indication of how heavy the traffic is.

Hi all
I can relate to the comment on building your own
Being on what looks like the first succesfull scratch built structure.
Its nothing fancy only a simple bush (country} passanger waiting shelter made out of ice cream sticks and a little comercial modeling timber.
But it llooks the part or rather it will when I get the rafters up and a corugated iron roof on it. and the name boards up.
I cheated on the name boards I got a local sign maker to do the name boards in that bi colour plastic usualy used on name badges.
But an avenue too discuss scratch building would be handy because there will always be that how do I do that moment.
Or a were do I get that question, and I got one now were do I get a paper crimper thing that can roll corugated iron out of aluminium soft drink can?
regards John

Captain: You have my sympathy. I am a scratchbasher, kitbasher, & mostly use a big hammer to kitbash & a cutting torch to scratchbuild. You oughta see some of my abominations. Weld spatters all over an N scale caboose.

Seriously, I like your idea. Fishwagon

Thanks,

I hate it when I have an "original" idea that someone has already done. Well, back to the drawing board.[:(]

Well, one thing for sure, with my eyesight scratchbuilding in G scale should certainly be a lot easier than HO or N scale. HO is the smallest I will ever touch. I don't see how anyone can build N scale without a humongous magnifying glass and tweezers.

This sounds interesting. A place we could show off our latest projects, share tips, discuss challenges, procedures etc. I would be of no help with the web site end of it but I am interested in what others think. Good idea. Later eh....Brian.

Yes, that is the main issue behind this "movement." I can do the website stuff, post pictures you guys send me. We can give it a guest book where we could communicate and continue to use the e-facilities of Trains.com. In fact, maybe we can get the folks at Kalmbach Publishing to give us some friendly encouragement.

Best thing is, no dues, no treasurers! Maybe a president and vice-president to give the thing vision & direction (possibly chapters for our British and Aussie friends) but mostly a gesellschaft of people of like interests in G Scale structures and cars. A place of help, trade/swap/sell and a nexus of learning, it could be great for us to build things for each others sets. It could set trends, provide things to newbies and provide better unique varieties of structures to the G scale populace.

Lets have more ideas and get this show on the road as it were.

Society of G Scale Scratch-Builders

Ladies and Gentlemen, I propose that we create an informal society of G Scale Scratch-Builders formed for purposes that we can develop here. I am not a very good scratch-builder; the things I have scratch-built for N scale have been…abominations at best. It is in this spirit that propose we charter, informally of course, a unit to share information and to, dare I say, build things for one another for a respectable fee to be determined by the builder.

I could provide a web-page to serve as an informal meeting hall. Not much, but a start.
