I recently acquired, at an auction, a train sold as being a Buddy-L locomotive and Tender. It's in very good condition and over the years had some restsoration done to it. Unfortunately I suspect this piece might not be authentic because of its excellent condition. When kids played with these trains back in the 1920s and 1930s they kicked them around, sat on them; tipped them over. My acquisition shows no signs of abuse which is why I'm suspicious. Also, I cannot find any makings or forge marks to indicate the manufacturer. I can take and email a photo of it to anyone who thinks they might help me

Is it mostly plastic? if it is then I would say it is a newer Buddy L. They still make and you can get Buddy L trains new. Although the newer ones made today are of poor quality. I bet thats what you have unless it is all metal.
He's talking about the original Buddy L's, Sean. They were all metal toy trains.
There's a guy here who has some. See this thread - http://cs.trains.com/trccs/forums/p/96105/1124099.aspx

I'd be taking to any Well Established antique dealer who specialises in toys--generally any auction house also should be able to steer you to an appraiser--they may be able to help.

There was a company about 10-15 years ago that made some very good reproductions of the original large all metal Buddy L gauge 3 stuff, its possible this could be one of these if its in very very good condition, still a highly desirable piece even as a repro.
Have fun with your trains
