No new poll this week
Posted by Rene Schweitzer on Thursday, April 8, 2004 8:29 AM
Hello everyone!

I'll be taking a couple of days off to enjoy the Easter holiday, so there won't be a new poll on Friday. I hope all of you have a great weekend, whether you're celebrating Easter, Passover, or spring break with the kids or grandkids!

Rene

Well Rene, have a good holiday.

I usually dont celebrate Easter unless it's watching Ben Hur or as i call it Ben Hurl, starring Chuck-get your stinking paws off me you dam dirty ape-Heaston. But after laughing thru last weekends broadcast of "the Ten Commandments" I dont think I could make it thru to the end. That movie, even though is about the Jewish deliverer, has more "ham" in it than a Hormel meat packing plant! "So let it be written, so let it be done!" the acting is sooooo bad in that movie and the last scenes are soooooo heavily overacted, overmakeuped, overly self righteous, its impossible not to laugh! Ben Hurl is not as badly acted but it too has is superbad acting moments, but the chariot race more than makes up for any other deficiencies.

   Have fun with your trains

Rene --

I hope you have an enjoyable weekend, because now that warmer weather is finally arriving, garden railroaders should become more active and the number of posts to this forum will increase.

Something I have always wondered about, though -- what is the purpose of these polls? The Model Railroader magazine forum has too many polls, and I can see no value to them. Who uses the information? Why are the polls started? Are they supposed to be input to a marketing campaign, or what? They have gotten so out of hand in some forums, that I don't even bother to respond to them any more..

I beg to differ, respectfully of course. The polls serve a very useful purpose; they spur debate and an exchange of knowledge. They act as a catalyst to bring out questions that lie in our unconscious mind

Additionally, they provide me with information on the opinions of my cohorts in the field of Garden Railroading. This allows me to respond to many of their posts in a respectful manner that lacks the usual “smack of ignorance” that I fond in political forums.

Yes, but you should be able to glean the same answers without making it a poll. Something I have noticed, too, is that sometimes the creator of a poll doesn't give respondents enough choices. It is not nearly as bad on this forum as on Model Railroader magazine, since Rene creates most of the polls here. On the MR forum, one joker even created a poll that had only one answer -- yes or yes. That's not a poll.

I understand your frustration. It is the common occurrence when serious people of a discipline gather and share different ideas of humor.

I have made a few polls and have tried to give answer choices that were well thought out and plentiful. People can voice their [2c] in the replies.
