Reminds me of the guy that is trying to sell a Lionel O Gauge Diesal as a Lionel G gauge Diesal on ebay. I almost fell for it yesterday as I love those old Lionel G gauge Diesals. I emailed him and he replied and now admits that he knows nothing about the gauges, but his ad is still there as a G.

Guys like that just make it harder for the newbies who actually want help.
I think all the stainz loco variants were mechanically identical until they went to the plastic valve gear. The D just signifies it had smoke from the factory. They are good runners, pull well, and there are tons of them out there (actually the Stainz is what most people think of first when someone says "LGB") It's a great little loco. The fact that the company made literally tons of them for decades and people still buy them (there's probably 50 of them on evilbay at any one time) attests to their popularity AND reliability. A collector could tell you more whether a certain cab number/color/smokestack style is "rarer" than any other.
You are a bit vague on what the brain buster question actually is. Do you need parts? Instructions? Maintenance tips? Trying to figure out how/where to unload it? (I'll give you $25 for it if it isn't too banged up and runs -- but then, I'm really cheap, lol)
Try Dale's Train Station on Popular Hall Drive right behind Military Circle Mall in Norfolk. 757 461-3636.
What is it you want to know? It's not clear. When it was made? How much it's worth? How to take it apart?
You might try posting this at Large Scale Central--there are some LGB experts there
