Probably silly question from someone new to trains

Never thought I'd be visiting a train forum, but my son loves trains.. He's graduating from wooden to electric. We have a G scale New Bright christmas train set. I was recently given a few LGB Toy Train cars, including a locomotive. Question is, can I use the LGB locomotive with the New Bright track & power? We will be using the trains indoors for now. Perhaps as we learn more we may consider moving outside...although as a read through some of the posts, it appears the tracks we have now would not fare well outdoors.

Welcome to our hobby! I would not use either the New Bright track or power supply for the LGB loco or any other Brand such as USA Aristo, etc.

I do not think (Could be wrong) the NB power supply is compatible with LGB, USA, Aristo, etc.

I do beleive if the New Bright is track powered 2 rail brass track with a power pack like other large scale makers it should work fine. All large scale stuff (and N and HO) is powered on the same DC 12v low voltage power supply, I know that the power pack I got from Bachmann Big Hualer set had N HO G printed on it and sure enough it works for all those scales, its only a .5amp powerpack though. I'd bet the pack you have is also a wimpy little .5amp pack, I would just put the LGB on the track, make sure the power pack is connected to the track well, and see if it runs, if the voltages are different it simply will not run.

I cannot see why New Bright would choose to make there product to a different voltage, they seam to copy and rip off everything else in large scale so why would they change now? Chances are the guts of your New Bright track powered train,and the power pack came from the same place in China that Bachmann and Aristo get the guts for there entry level stuff from.

Welcome to the forum! The previous posts pretty much cover what you need to know about track. As for the hobby, I would recommend that you pick up a copy of Garden Railways mag. Have a good look through and you will get a good idea of the magnificent possibilities the hobby has to offer. All of us started somewhere.
