Where to shop...

I would agree with Vic. I'm just getting into G-Scale and live about thirty minutes from St. Aubins. I honestly have not looked around much, but I visited there for the first time a couple Sunday's ago. "LOTS" of stuff!!! Live Steam, electrics, expensive, cheap, many, many selections. I had a hard time walking out of there for under $200 bucks. From the limited scouting I've done, their prices seem pretty competitive. I also spoke briefly to the owner. He was stocking shelves! I imagine their overhead is low! He's been selling RR equipment since 1995.

I'm also about 45 minutes from Walthers. What a great place to live!!

Thank you, I will give them a try and mark them as one of my dealers. You are lucky to live so close.

A new train store is opening in Corpus Christi called Lonestar Trains, but that is still 70 miles from my house.

Gonna' be going down to the show Aristo is putting on in the Mid West in May. Plan to do a whole lotta' shopping down there. I plan to scout out all the potential stops I can make along the way. St. Aubins should be one. Can hardly wait!!! Later eh...Brian.

Cappy,

If you don't have a well stocked hobby store within easy commuting distance from your house, you will find that dealing with either St Aubin or Trainworld should satisfy most of your needs. If you order by phone, the folks at the other end are all very knowledgable and will answer most of your questions. Obviously there is nothing like seeing and handling the equipment before purchasing it. So a long distance trip to a hobby store once in a while to get a feel for what is new and exciting is probably a pretty good idea.

Before St Aubins opened their new store here in Las Vegas, I ordered many items from them over the phone. Everything went very well, and I highly recommend them. I've also had good experiences with Trainworld & Watts.

Of course, now that St Aubins is here in town, I can hardly justify the phone call when I am a mere 30 minutes away from garden railroading heaven!!!

Again, Thank you all. I have made an order from TrainWorld and plan to help the economy and patronize them all for the sake of contracting view points and comparative shopping.

You have all been so helpful as I start. My goal, after finishing a relatively comple layout, is to return the favor and share what I have learned.

Capt. C,
That is what it is all about. If we can save each other from a headache or two we will. At the same time "What Works" is also very welcome. We have a great bunch here to say the least. You will discover "tricks" of your own as you go. Then you can share them with all of us here. Enjoy the forum...we are!!! Later eh...Brian.

Up i n Canada I definately recommend Ultimate Trains for their competitive price, and the fact that there is no GST charge because they are in Alberta![tup]

I drive to St. Aubins in Woodstock. They have tons of stuff and the prices are real good too . I've had problems with a couple of items and the owner Pat was always real understanding and helpful .

Hey Brian. One note about St Aubins in Woodstock if you do visit.... Not much to look at from the outside. Thought I was in the wrong place until I noted the LGB sign in the front window. Would have probably driven around some had I not seen it. Looks to be in an old Garden Nursery store-front. There's still a nursery business around it and one of the patrons said that he works on their outdoor layout. I didn't see the layout as it was a crummy day. May should be a good time to see what they have outside too!

So, don't be taken aback by the looks. Inside is G-Scale heaven! Live steam K27's under glass, every type of rail, electrics, streamlines, classics, etc.!! [:p]

s51flyer,
Where in Wisconsin is Woodstock? Looked in my travel atlas and I found a small town in the northern part of the state. Is that it? Let me know. Later eh...Brian.

Brian,

Woodstock is actually in Illinois. I live just over the border in Kenosha, WI. You'll find it at the intersections of 47 and 120, about due south of Lake Geneva, WI.
