Hope you're feeling better.

Some of those narrow gauge passenger cars were pretty tall -

To throw a little more Dark Matter into the galactic whirlpool, page 2 of the previous issue, and backcover of current issue of GR shows the Aristo Railbus advertisement and a clearly stated scale of 1/24, yet as noted in the catalog the very same combine who's body is used for the Railbus is clearly called out as 1/29, Aristo's gone Gummi, exact same body, 2 different scales...is it a case of whatever is convienient at the time or is the scale a purely random assignment?

The USA Overton cars are my favorite passenger cars but they are a 1:24 model of a short 34' car. They're only 17 inches but are a perfect fit for the C-16 -

The Jackson Sharp passenger cars were in the 49 - 59 feet range.

-Brian

I know what is wrong with this picture! Cab is way out of scale! If Cab was higher you could pass it or put a gondola between them.

Hi all, I looked in an old book on the Sierra Railroad (SIERRA RAILWAY by Dorothy Newell Deane daugther of the Sierra's builder) and in a photo section between pages 102 and 103 there are several photos of the Sierra's Angels Branch passenger cars. Actually the cars seem to match USA's Overton cars more than Aristo's Sierra cars.

Have fun, Rob

When I ran my doozie  with my USAT Sierra  coach IT LOOKED worng, But when I ran it with a Bmann coach it was OK exception being the coach was TOOOO long. It now run's as a singel unit train on my ridge line .

Rivit Counters!!!!! Would say something else but placing up against another model is bad. Go to orginal drawings. IF you have them, are you sure there orginal? Best be.

Why I will run what I want and very height. BTW Drop the railbus to the correct size if it bothers you or raise the coaches.

Dave were you running the Aristo railbus?

The USA Sierras are definelty different looking from the Aristo's Sierra cars. I beleive the USAs are based on the old Delton models, that would explain the definite differences between the body on my Doozie and the body on the Aristo Railbus, but the other parts on the Aristo do look like they were based on the Delton model.

I'm guessing the Doozie is different from the Sierra cars then. Isn't the Doozie from Delton molds? I know its listed in the 1:24 AristoClassic line.

-Brian

Thats possible, the window pattern on my doozie is different than the Sierra combine but the Sierra combine is the car Aristo uses for the Railbus, and the railbus is based almost verbatum off the old Delton Doozie model, while the side window pattern is different, front cab enclosure and hood extension are dead-on right off the old Delton modelm, as are the motor block mounts and lead truck set up.  I wonder if Aristo didn't rework the model at some time in the past using some of the old Delton model as a base while allowing the use of the Aristo upgraded combine body.

edit- EHH getting old, my Delton is the same model HLWs railbus is based on, its NOT the same one Aristos is built on, so lets not get confused talking apples and oranges...Sigh

Re the Sierra's I think what we have is a perfect example of a gummified model, its niether a scale 1/24 or 1/29 model but exists somewhere in that nebulus inbetween world. When San-Val had these on display next to Aristo's heavyweight cars, it was very apparent that they if these were 1/29, they would be absolutly enormous as they were taller than the heavyweight car!, so we always presumed these were really initially targeted at the 1/22.5 narrow gauge market back when they first came out, but as time has progressed and Aristos dominant role in 1/29, maybe they're just pulling an LGB gummi scale on their own model, tying it to the 1/29 lineup. Indeed if you look at their catalog in the starter sets, the set using the 0-4-0 switcher with the Sierras, its very apparent they are not the same scale as the Sierra's end door looks taller than the switchers entire cab!

I have a 1989 Walthers large scale catalog somewhere, I'll have to fish it out and see what they were advertising these as back then, that should help clear the muddy waters hopefullyWink

Okay Vic! Lets get ready to rumble! Shock

I knew the doors are too short for 1:24 but never actually measured them.

They are 69 mm tall.

69 x 24 / 25.4 / 12 = 5.4 feet

69 x 29 / 25.4 / 12 = 6.6 feet

Oh! Vic is hit! Black Eye and down for the count! Dead

Well I would HIGHLY suggest someone actually take a scale to these before we bless them as 1/29,  just because Lewis says these are 1/29, doesnt mean they are 1/29 scale, as they are as tall as a 1/22.5 Bachmann Coach, dont beleive me, put one behind Lewis's 1/24 C-16 and see how small it makes the lokie look in comparison. If these were 1/29 they would be no larger than HLW's long coachs which are 1/24 scale, yet they are much bigger, like I said, SOMEONE WHO HAS ONE please take a 1/29 scale and tell us how tall the door is, and no it should not be 9' tall. If you dont have a 1/29 scale tell us how tall it is in inches, in 1/24 a typical 7' door would be 3-1/2" tall, in 1/32" 7' is 2-5/8", so at 1/29, 7' would be around 3", so if the door is a fair bit taller than 3" then it aint 1/29 scale.

I have the old Delton Doozie which Aristos railbus is based on, IT IS NOT 1/29 scale, it is most definelty in the 1/22.5 range.

If these scale out to 1/29th, I'm a Chinese Fighter PilotWink

I don't have the Aristo Railbus or Sierra passenger equipment, however I printed out the railbus and combine side by side from the Aristo website and it sure looks like they used the Sierra combine body mold for both models. My judgement is that everybody is right on this one.

Brian has the right of it.   The Aristo catalog shows them in the 1:29 section and the description states that they are indeed 1:29.    The only passenger equipment shown in the Classic section is the railbus.

I'm going to disagree with you on this one, Vic. Yes, The REA /AristoCraft Sierra Cars are 1:29 models of a standard gauge passenger car. The prototype is in the B&O museum -

If you mean these, no they are not 1/29 scale, they were made to be compatible with LGBs 1/22.5 scale.

Are R-E-A passenger cars 1:29 scale?
Posted by skippygp123 on Thursday, November 13, 2008 9:08 AM

I know that R-E-A became Aristo-Craft.  But, were the old R-E-A passenger cars 1:29 scale like the Aristo-Craft passenger cars are today?

I do not suffer from insanity...I enjoy every minute of it!!!      Over 60 and still playing with toys!
