I kinda got a feeling that the guys that took it already had a buyer lined up before ripping it off. Let's face it, that isn't really an item that would appeal to your traditional "Smash & Grab" thieves.

I think you have a very valid point there.  This sounds to me like a deliberate hit targeting an item that they already had a buyer for.  Considering the location, I'd tend to agree with Toad Frog that the item was probably across the border before the theft was even discovered.
