Have you ever went where your houses and all are sitting and think man that looks like crap! Not that you did not take your time or even do special add-ons to it but just looking at it makes you scratch your head about it??????
Toad
Ummmmmm, what?
Are we referring to the rather generic stock of structures avalable out there?
If thats the case, ALL THE TIME, one of the main beefs I have about large scale is how invariably, inevitably, most layouts look genericly similar because we ALL have the same Piko or Pola profile buildings on them, doesn matter what colors we paint them, they ARE the same structures...and they've gotten way more expensive lately, Piko buildings that were about $36 when I started, are now over $65! Ouch!
Being in the hobby poorhouse, even more-so now that the Econ has done the big toilet bowl dive and the Dollar value is racing to match the Peso, I have to make myself start doing things like scratchbuilding, particularly structures, which I will be doing for both indoor and outdoor layouts, if I ever get that area cleared out..
One the major plus side, indoors I can use easy materials like cardstock and balsa wood ...
Have fun with your trains
Then do what do and SCRATCH build stuff!!!
I hear yeah Vic!
They have a filling station for tank cars I wanted but @ under $200.00 I am not about to get it.
That is more for the rich and I am not one of them! I only get 1 check a month and has to last me....
Wish I had one of my old jobs back where I could get paid in cash and let that be my train money.

I really ment something you built or bought as a kit. Some times I guess you can say I second guess myself on my projects.
Some don't feel they meet my full 5 star passing grade.
Maybe I am in a low after this dang storm, heck I don't know......
Thats one thing I can say is so far all my things are built from scratch. (Although my things dont look nearly as good as the bought ones)
I cant believe what some of these things go for. I have seen things made by others and they sell them for a couple hundred bucks to over a thousand bucks. thats just crazy. I dont even spend that much on my engines. I think it means more when you can say I built that from scratch and it has more character
All I know is that if I ever get the outdoor line going, I'll be using alot of those commercially available birdhouses as a base kit to do some structures and rebuilding on top of them, I'll be scratching the rest, but I'm planning a minimalist approach outdoors, less stuff for the dog to demolish the better.
Guys you have a point. I remember visiting railroads at National Conventions, often the topic in transit would be, "Let's see how they arranged their Pola buildings?" Scratch building is one solution. One of my favorite HO modelers was Art Curren, kit basher, masher, mangler, mingler extrordenair. He considered kits as parts boxes. I got some Colorando Model kits and plan to do Virginia St. Reno, NV.
Have fun, Rob
