Hi Budd2

This apparently is a problem for a couple of versions of said loco.

You will have to do a bit of research but some one out there does an after market replacement gear set in brass that will not strip.

Mine has done the same but is in some one elses workshop geting turned into a West Australian wood line locomotive

Which will look odd to both US and UK eyes as it looks not quite US but not UK iether when finished as it has features from both infuences

Simple, it lets them get more money.  Cause if your locomotive breaks, you buy a new oneWhistling [:-^], which is completely stupidBanged Head [banghead]

Nooo, it means I go find some other gears that'll work. Tongue [:P]

I just ordered a new gear box.  Could not get just the gear.  Hopefully it is easy to do.  I would have been covered under the warrenty except I misplaced my reciept.  oh well lesson leared.  The gear box ( the most recent big hauler engine) cost 25 bucks in case anyone was wondering.

Glad this issue came up and is well discussed. Last night my Bauchmann 4-6-0 just stripped something and came to a halt.   Finally have the excuse to tear into it!

Welcome Budd.

Kitbash it into another loco with other/another drive system.

Or you can get gears from other places if you poke around awhile.

Note the 5th Generation Bmann will also have a large bump on the bottom.

Two small screws probably means version 5, and you'll be okay.

Could be a 4, in which case.......

 Crushing locomotives?

Why not?

One of the reasons I recommended NEVER send your custom-lettered, sound-equipped, detail parts added unit back for repair.

Get the part or return just the bad part.

Too many folks over the years have gotten a "new" loco back, and by the time they get it and can complain, theirs is dust.

That strange, my big hauler also striped the gears.  I posted this on the large scale cemtral.  The cause of the gears striping was due to the 2 small screws that holds the motor to the gear box came loose.  This caused the motor to shift away from the gear just enough to wear the teath away.  I have had it for less than a year so I am hopping B-mann will replace it for free.  This is the newer version of the big hauler.

Depends on version.

There are 5 distinct 4-6-0 chassis, none of which have interchangeable gears.

The latest has a rivetted gearbox, you will need the entire unit, if I recall.

Versions 1-4 have all been crushed, and no parts.

Please determine version.

Some of us that have installed Barry's Chassis have saved old parts and may have some.

Bachmann is the best source as mentioned above.  The 2-8-0 transmission gears (3) are $9 and they are pretty easy to replace.  Bachmann will do overnight UPS if you are very pressed for time but it costs a bundle.  The axel gear does require you to purchase the whole axel gear assembly plus you pretty much have to tear down the whole lower body.  I was able to build a metal one from an RC car spare part I found at a hobby shop so that's another option.  Good luck!

I think your best bet would be to go to the source: Bachmann. Phone 1-800-356-3910 or e-mail service@bachmanntrains.com  I was able to get replacement gear for my 2-8-0, although I hade to purchase the entire axil and wheel assembly but reasonable. As an alteritive, you could send the engine back to them and they will repair it for you. Call and they will quote a price for you. Jack

Northwest Short Line (www.nwsl.com) sells gears.  I do not know if they have one for the Big Hauler, but they do have many gears in almost all scales.
