I was about to suggest visiting Marty Cozad's garden railroad, but I Googled the locations ...but its a 275 mile trip, one way, to Marty's place in Nebraska City from North Platte...Oh well..
As for west coast, if your in Los Angeles, the LA LIVE STEAMERS are open every sunday at Griffith Park near downtown LA, its actually closer to Burbank and Glendale but most visitors only know downtown as a reference point. It s a really great place if your into finger burning tea-kettles.

Travel Town railroad museum is next door to the live steamers to boot!

Also in the area; Fillmore & Western RR, a tourist line not too far away.

And if you have the time, I highly recommend the Orange Empire Railway Museum in Perris, Ca. Its a good ways east from LA but worth the trip.
