Google Earth Your Layout!
Posted by Mt Beenak on Tuesday, May 27, 2008 10:34 PM

Has this game been played before?

I noticed that Google Earth has increased the resolution over our place.  (Does this mean we are due for an invasion?...it happened in Iraq).  I took a screen capture of the page [ctrl + Print Screen], pasted it into 'Paint', then drew in the trackplan. (very roughly).

For scale, the garage is 4.5 metres wide (14 feet 10 inches) Here are a couple of older aerial views, in higher resolution, taken from the garage roof.

Anyone else want to play?

Despite the fact--or maybe because of the fact--that we live a few miles from the Pentagon, Google Earth and Google maps have a very old photo of our house, nearly ten years old. I had better luck with microsoft's mapping site, "livesearch, which gives you a "bird's eye view." But our railroad is brand new, so the picture doesn't show it. I did my best to add the track plan but it's off by a good bit

I'm playing. I wound up using Mike's suggestion of the MS live search. Its much more current and gives you multiple views. I wound up printing it out and using a sharpie to mark the layout -

The trackage looks like this -

Brian, that's a nice track plan--great combination of visual appeal and operation. Mine is set up pretty much all for "looks" but I suspect over time it will be amended
