Most US track gauges look more like this one, Aristo large scale gauge

I've seen those but they are just less common over here

Looks like that is way thin metal and making track, how would it hold up to day to day use?

Levels are for? Roller test if it will roll with out resistance I am thinking.

I made it on photoshop about a year ago when they were chatting about the "Promontory Point" Utah quarter. Being a big "Big Love" fan I thought I would make my own version.

Getting back to the subject at hand, I rather like the rolling track gauge idea.   I made a rolling level that I use for checking side to side level when ballasting, and it sure saves a lot of time; I suspect a rolling track gauge would be invaluable to those who hand lay thier track.  Just a matter of spike one tie and roll to the next, instead of something you'd have to pick up and move to the next checkpoint!

Levels are for making sure your track is level so when the train comes along it doesnt fall off and ruin everyones dayWink [;)]

I used this guage making my pizza track, the little pegs on the bottom are the gauge for spacing track. It has alot of other usefull things on it.

I use the traditional flat comb type -I got mine from "Cliff Barker".

The top half is gauge widened for corners and the inner slots are for the check rail positions for points and cross overs. The two prongs at the LHS are for frogs and the stub on the top RHS is for the spacers for the wings of the points. The only problem I have with it is that it is aluminium alloy and very slippery due to it's polish and light weight...

The roller type is normally sold by "Slaters".

Not tested, no testing wheelies yet for that gauge but front feels abit loose, think it is a gear.

Peace Out,

Ralphiepoo,

Sand blast the sides and it should give you a better grip.

William,

The reason it is so slippery is that my horny fingers have a very poor grip on it anyway. If I sand blasted it, I would erase all the measurement markings off it, that are etched into it. When you have fingers and hands my size, (thumb tip to little finger tip is 25cm), even a Gauge 3 track gauge is little on the small side....

(Besides which, I don't have a sand blaster -or any compressed air equipment come to that!!!)

ralph
