Thank you for your help !!, I am running O and Standard O Gauge trains, My largest is a 4-8-4

Loco with magatraction no rubber traction tires, I was not sure on how much rise to make,

Whether you model in Z scale or 12 inch to the foot, it is best (under most situations) to keep the grade down to or less than 4%. That means 4 inches of rise in 100 inches of run. The main reason to keep the grade this low is to allow maximum number of cars being pulled by minimum number of powered units.

Say 2020,

I too, do 3-rail "O" scale, along with "G" gauge, general rule is what ever you can negotiate with your motive power, I'd say. I been doing "O" for over 50 years myself, an what ever I could climb, I'd do.

My original set was the 2353 series Santa Fe "Warbonnets" and five streamliners, my father got it for me about 6-8 months before my birth, gave it to me "Officially" at age of 8yrs.

Can someone please tell me what is the rule of thumb for O scale layout grades?

is it 1/2 inch rise per section? or no...
