And people wonder why real names aren't used by some

A notice and request to the model railroader community:   Within the last several days, a local HO scale collection / layout was victimized by major theft. The exact timeline and scope of the loss is yet to be determined but the total in locomotives lost is somewhere between 100 and 150 units, plus an estimated 200 to 300 modern freight cars including coil coaches, covered hoppers, box cars, military flats w/ loads, auto racks, etc. The crime was committed sometime between Monday February 12th and Friday, the 15th. The locomotives taken include Atlas, Kato, Proto 2000, and Athearn Genesis / RTR / built-up kits. A number of custom built units were also stolen including a beautiful cabless BN SD40-2, custom built B&P & IAIS geeps, and W&LE SD40-2. A very partial list is attached. The list will be completed and distributed after an inventory has been completed. *** An important note: all of the locomotives are analog compatible. At the time of the theft, other than a few of the ATLAS geeps, none are DCC compatible. *** I ask that all of you be watchful for any major "private" collection that hits the market, whether it be at the upcoming Waldameer or Lakeland shows, E-bay, local train / hobby shops, etc. The magnitude of what was stolen is mind-boggling and will not be easily dispersed without someone taking notice. Please feel free to contact me or Carl Amidon with any questions by return e-mail.   The collection that has been damaged represents thousands of hours of "hobby" time, not to mention the thousands of dollars spent. Many, many items cannot be replaced. This could happen to any of us. Thank you in advance for your help. Lenny Sarnowski Elk Valley Railroad Club, Inc.

Sure theft happens but it most likely happened by someone local who knew what was there and when the house would be empty.

This is indeed a sad event. I will be sure to keep a sharp eye out (as always) for so called "hot" deals and anything else that just doesn't seem right.

I agree, however, that it has all the trademarks of being an inside job, or at least somebody familiar with the victim.  A similar racket is happening in hot rod clubs where a member will spend thousands on a car and then it gets stolen on the night it's finished.

It's a shame we can't even play with our trains without fear of them being stolen.  I for one will not live in fear as my gun and knife collection is much larger than my trains.  Plenty ammo also, signs posted and OEF/OIF PTSD alibi.

Unfortunately you can't use those things when you are not there. (I have a nice armoury as well).  I would not have put out my railroad if it wasn't for my privacy fence that gives a little camouflage.....and the several sets of large teeth that I let roam in my backyard!  But no protection system is perfect if someone is intent on stealing you property...but you can make it as hard as heck.

It is a shame that we can't share our creations with our neighbors without the fear of vandalism or theft.  What has America come to?

Locks are only for honest people!   When somebody can electronically get into your bank account armed with nothing other than the account number taken off a check (while you have to show your drivers license to cash your own check at the same bank), and nobody is or can be held responsible, something is very wrong!

No matter what you do, you are vulnerable; so other than taking reasonable precautions I refuse to get too wound up about my trains.

I do have Paws and Jaws mobile alarm system.

What's really weird is reading the old magazines....."Charles Brombaugh, 3710 Westmoreland Drive, Pawtucket, Rhode Island" with a postal code (not ZIP).

I am surprised that in the old days we didn't have more of that.

I've had stuff taken, while we were operating, no less, and the cops say it's someone who we probably know.

Yes in most cases this is very true......Sad to say that is exactly what happend to me, the person, I guess you could maybe say, did however receive a just reward......Had a heart attack and died about 6 months later.

About a year later, a good bit of my things started to show up on the bay, I notified the vendor and he did confirm that the items came from a family member of the late heart attack victim, he said, had he known, he would never have purchased them.

Well, I put in a car alarm system in for my friend, just made to scare the carp out of them and wake him up.

I tested the system after checking it all out, 5 weeks later @ 3:00am I did a full test and whole place lit up and bells a ringing!

Nice to know your not loved at 3:00am by all in the hood! Evil [}:)]
