What I wanted, from Accurcraft, only in narrow gauge:
So with an old Bug Mauler drivetrain I had modified previously to an 0-6-0 set up but had never done anything with, I gave it a whirl...
Boiler, 60mm PVC, cut and fitted to the Bug Mauler chassis, boy was this one hellova mess to cut
Tender test, I just had this one left over from my 2-4-2 that got mashed into a Heisler
A/C switcher pilot beam attached
Stack from a A/C switcher, cheapo Scientific domes, assorted fiddly bits attached
Rear view with fiddly bits attached, cab from a Scientific epoxied to the boiler
Side view, the whole boiler/cab assembly can be unscrewed from the drive with the same screw holes
Pilot with steps and tank added
I literally threw this one together quite literally as Warren would say, "right out of the garbage can" (parts trough), and I might say with a rather unashamed sloppyness and a further unashamed haste. I'm getting more impatient as I age.
Test ran it on the layout. Runs like crap!
Herky jerky due to poor power pick up. Crap drive! Need to add pickups to all the tender wheels to fix that. Thats why I screwed the boiler/chassis togther so I can add a different drive chassis somewhere down the line. I'm not too sure about that tender, looks smallish, have a slopeback coming from weaselBay. We'll see how that looks when that arrives. Need to change the headlight with one that works.
I will post some more pics soon, maybe tonight.
Have fun with your trains

Very nice Vic!
Toad
is this the one you were teasing us about?
Looks good, now try to build your own big boy for under $200.

After seeing any Vic's stuff, I know he could.
Looks cool man!!! And here I was going to mold a cab and front of a track cleaner, but I can see my hands stuck together. No really it is great! Only thing about the wheels I never liked was the dumby one when not on the track.
Tell you the truth, have not touched any thing since dad past on.
So how about a vidio of this fine looking engine running on the NEW layout??
Dave
The head is gray, hands don't work , back is weak, legs give out, eyes are gone, money go's and my wife still love's Me.
Sorry guys no videos for a while. I've been down with them flu for the last 2 days, looks like I'll be down for another couple at least, so much for my flu shot!
I been placing my stuff in boxes. Maybe when I get older a spark will trigger again. All I will be doing as far as G Gauge is producing critter parts for who ever.

Well now, if you were to pay particular heed to what you were doing and it could make it through a 38 inch radius inside a tunnel with 5 inch clearance to the inside of the curve............ You could drive down to Oceanside. Just don't expect to try the run up to Chateau de Vic atop the falls.

Toad, I dont know how involved your dad was with you in your hobby, if he was very involved with you that can be rough hurdle to overcome, but even just the loss of any family member is traumatic, so give yourself enough time to grieve and reflect, trains are less important than family, with time the bug will either return or you'll find something else that you enjoy doing, thats the nature of hobbies.
The Flu is way better then what i still have, I was in the hospital for 5 days, and I still am recovering, my 2hr outing to the LHS wore me out. So let's get busy with the Vidio's

And I ask one more time.
Com'on Dave, I havent even had a chance to wire the pick ups from the tender to the engine yet, so there no way I'm going to video this herky-jerky till I do that...
I havent been at my bench all week for more than 5 minutes at a time, mostly to change a coupler or two, been a busier week than usual!
OK I'm going on a road trip anyway I'll be looking on tuesday.
OK Dave here you go...

Ya happy?
Damm u. I was making an impression of "Thomas the thank engine" an half way threw cutting I began to realize that I was turning from blowing up this thing and making it a 2-6-0T&T. Ill post some pics as aoon as I find my camera. where did it go?
Any new progress?
After all the discussion about the new USA and Piko docksiders valve gear, I added crosshead and stephenson valve mechanism, I think it looks the better for it.
I second that motion! If anyone could do it, Vic would be my first choice.
SNOWSHOE wrote:vic, you do great work. Hope I can get that good some day. I just saw the video of it on your indoor layout. Very cool. dont know how i missed that video. I really like that layout. Have you been able to get anymore work done to it?
Just the crossheads and I finished the backhead, which was very basic, nothing worth posting, just enough that it doesnt look empty, I still have alot of plumbing detail I want to add to this one to give it more depth, again in a simplified form, its already at a very basic level of detail, very apparent when you see it up close.
Try it, I started with using cheap disposable battery locomotives and cars. Not much to risk losing when your entire train set cost $40

But where would I run it? I'm R1 restricted.
I've considered joining a club like the Del Oro or the Fairplex so I could build and run a larger engine, I already have two pet projects, well 3 if you consider the Dean Single as well, the other 2 are both Russian, one being the AA20, the largest rigid frame locomotive ever built at a 4-14-4 wheel arraingment;
AA20
The other is my favorite apochrophylicly legendary long lost "Big Joe" atomic locomotive, built in the 1950's for the Trans Siberian service, a massive articulated Garret 4-12-12-4 + 4-12-12-4 fueled by a dry graphite reactor, which was a disasterous choice as it got so hot it melted the permafrost under the artic circle test track and triggering a meltdown causing the whole engine to sink into the superheated mud, disappearing forever.
Please note the "Big Joe" exists today only in fiction and in legend. I would love to build a version of this maybe using a pair of Aristo Mallet's as the basis.

Plan of the "Big Joe"
even if built as a 4-8-8-4 + 4-8-8-4 it would be a mighty impressive sight prowling the Fairplex
