Just finished the flat car minus any detail parts it is 10 1/2 inches long and 2 1/4 inches wide.  I found a spare "No Parking" sign at work I think I might take a sawzall to it and cut it up to try and make a plow with Confused [%-)]

Made a new post over in the Scratchbuilding part of the forums w/pic's! Big Smile [:D]

So im building one, Every model of them I have seen in various other scales dont quite look the same and there all modeled after the same car so Im just going to do my best to make it look like the car it wont be perfect but im hoping it atleast turns out sorta nice Confused [%-)]

Since I have a Bachmann gondola with no trucks im using the botom part as a base (not the whole car the the part the trucks attach too) with like 3" cut out of the center. Im going to be building the car bed ontop of that using wood i got from Hobby Lobby to build a platform with, im guessing that thingamajiger ontop in the middle that looks like a switch stand i'll just use an ozark swith stand and for the railings ill use brass.... only thing im really stumped on is the plow?

What can I use to make the plow? Confused [%-)]

funny you post that pic i was pacing in the living room trying to come up with somthing to use as a base when i spotted a short flat car like the one pictured that came with the LGB starter set i got my sisters kid... still a little to wide but its a start!

He stole my Durango & Silverton bobber caboose and doesnt use the flat car much i dont think he will mind Whistling [:-^]

I think the D and RG flanger posted a few posts up would be a pretty simple scratchbuild.

Personally I would just start by scrathbuilding a short flat (which I have plan for from Garden Railways and looks to be about the right length) and get a pair of trucks. The bolsters are a little different then a lot of cars I have seen, so I would prolly need some upclose pics of those. Looks like they are meant to help support the plow. Then I think after that it is a matter of cutting and fitting the plow (which I am sure some detail place sells) and adding the detail parts. Then of course paint and couplers.

I would say go for it! Sounds like a good beginner project for a scratchbuild.

EDIT:

Here is an HO scale model you could base it off of.....

And some pics of other flangers that might help in a build

The thing is it's shorter than a flat car and also more narrow, im thinking I would have to buld up everything from scratch except the trucks (have an extra set off a bachmann box car)

And what about the plow blades? Confused [%-)]

The caboose one sound's cool but I really like the looks of the small flatcar one behind the engine alot Blush [:I]

Shoot I'd just grab a flat and a Logging caboose slap em together so the caboose is the "cab" over the contrals and stick a desal plow, with noches cut for the rails, underneath. And if you wnata get tricky make the chimney the handel for the plow mechanism.

Now if that actually dropped into the wheel flange area it would be a flanger.

Flangers where used to clear snow and ice from the inside of the rail heads, because of this they had to be raised at switches and road crossing.  If you do some searching on you tube for rotary snow plows the guys doing the video were traveling ahead to clear out the flange areas at road crossings.

I think there were kits made for 1:22.5 or possibly 1:24 about 5-10 years ago.  Don Winter kits?  In fact I believe a full MOW train was available.

Just wish I knew they existed at the time they were available.  Very hard to find now.

If you're changing to 1:20.3 (probably not though with you're new LGB Drovers) then it should be  pretty easy to find a flanger:

Here's a brand new OV Spreader, which is like a flanger

And a flanger was made not too long ago and should still be easy to find.

In 1:20.3 there are a few MOW pieces starting to come out. I think I recently read about a flanger coming out but I'll have to do some looking back thorugh web sites to find it. If you are interested in 1:20.3 items this page seems to be a pretty good source as of late.

That maybe where I've seen a flanger lately.
