I have one of the old original 1988 Delton C-16 2-8-0s lettered for the RGS and after frying the motor had shelved it for a number of years,have just found a number of original motors so plan on getting it running again But would also like to repaint it and replace/improve some of the detail parts... checkvalves,airpumps etc.another thing ,Has anyone attempted building a new cab from wood replacing the plastic one for this locomotive?
Also plan on replacing the tender wood load with a coal load, I assume the stock diamond stack would not be correct for a coalburner,yes/no?

A few ideas from C-16s I've done:
Extended smokebox, round domes (castings from a friend's "modern" C-16 domes), new pilot, and styrene laminated over the cab for new rivet details.
Extended smokebox, new headlight, crosshead-driven feedwater pump, new tender, styrene laminated onto cab sides for different look, and other cosmetic mods here and there.

Depending on how hard you run your locos, I'd think about waiting until Aristo-Craft releases their updated C-16 drive instead of just remotoring the original Delton chassis. The two C-16s shown above ran on either the original Delton motor (screwed directly into the plastic frame) or the "next generation" block, where the motor was screwed into a machined aluminum mount. Neither loco still runs because the motor mounts crapped out and stripped the gears. The third (not shown above, but in the linked article) is the original Aristo version with a somewhat improved drive, and runs rather reliably. The upcoming drive unit is supposed to be even better.
Mind you, it was supposed to be released this time last year...

As Kevin noted, it would be better to await the new release Aristo C-16 (preproduction model shown at the Aristo web site as of today, with the new drive block - due for release first quarter 2008). The new version has full metal wheels, metal side rods, all wheel drive and best of all, is lowered to the correct height (same as the original Deltons were).
One more thing - if your C-16 was the indeed the Rio Grande Southern version (actually made by Early American Trains in 1993 under the Delton banner) with Maroon tender and cab, and black boiler, Tender with white sunrise RGS herald on the sides, then you should perhaps consider repairing it as-is. This version was pretty rare with very few made. There are a number of Delton collectors out there, and you may be surprised how much a nicely looked after unit with drive repaired might be worth..Even non funtional (with good external condition) she'll be worth a lot more than yet another junked up, black repainted old Delton. If your version is the usual Black, Grey and red D&RG version - Loads were made, and they're not so valuable anymore, usually going for $100-$200 on e-bay. The RGS version - only ever seen two come up on e-bay in 8 years, bidding went to around the $500 mark.

Thanks for the links and information, My C-16 does have the maroon tender with the sunrise herald .The Label on the original box states {Early American Trains C16 Engine - 2225R Rio Grande Southern} The cab is black with maroon walkways. the Delton builders plate shows 1988 as its date of erection....
That's the one! Dont cut it up is my advice! Yes thats the Early American Trains version from 1993 (all the C-16s have the 1988 plates, despite the first ones not actually getting to the shops until 1989!). That one is pretty collectable. Retain and repair I reckon and get it onto e-bay if you're not interested in keeping it, and spend the time and $$ on another loco with good drive in it. I'm not sure of the numbers, but there were probably around 20 RGS C-16s made.

I have gone through the running gear ,cleaning out all the old dried up caked on grease, because of age it had literary crystalized they used what looked like lithium grease on it at the factory . found the reason the original motor had burned up' the screws attaching the siderods to the front set of drivers were way overtightened ,the wheels were very hard turning, now after loosening up the screws a turn or two the wheels now turn when pushed across a sheet of glass.....this yet without lubrication. Also noticed several minor plastic parts that have broken I could just use CA on them but Aristo-Craft seems to have replacements.....this is goot.....yes!!
And yes most likely I will be selling it once i concider it in excellent condition as I',m not a collecter but a runner of my locomotives.
Came across several frames, cabs, and such for the C-16. I guess I could build it from the ground up? Any parts out there (I have not checked).

Nice work. I want to put some pictures on after I do the message part, of my two Grand Trunk Western 2 8 2's, (Mikes). I butchered two LGB engines to make them. But on this form, (I am having a gray moment !!!! how did you add your pictures. I can't find the prompt to add photos. Your help would be most appreciated in this matter.
