Track Magnet ???
Posted by kyboy227 on Friday, October 12, 2007 11:57 PM

Hello All !

I recently purchased a used LGB diesel engine.  It had belonged to this guy's father.  He said the engine had a horn installed and I would need a TRACK MAGNET to initiate the horn as the engine passed over it.....and that is all he knew.  He could not tell me what the magnet looked like or where I might be able to purchase one.

Can I just glue a magnet to the cross ties and make it work?  Does this scenario sound familiar to anyone?  Is there such a thing as a TRACK MAGNET???...or was he mistaken in what he was telling me?  H E L P !

Howdy,

You can pick up  item LGB 17050 Track Magnet at your local hobby store that sells LGB trains and accessories. Check out E-Bay under LGB trains. They usually list 800 to 1000 listings of various LGB products. You should be able to get one for 5 or 6 bucks.

They fit between the rails on your G scale track and will either trigger a bell or whistle(horn)  sound from your LGB unit (depending on which direction you install the magnet).

I have never tried just attaching any old magnet between the rails. The units are so inexspensive that idea never occured to me.

                                         Regards,

                                          Zak

I have lots of them around the RR so I can hear where the train is and know its still running. Plus when I'm talking they still work.

Is it REAL? or Just 1:29 scale?

BUY??? You don't buy these, you make them. Everyone is familiiar with the kitchen cupboard door magnets, comes in a plastic retainer and screws into frame. Remove them from the plastic holder, you will finde a hole drilled already into it. Use a small wooden block to screw the magnet into the block and insert between track. Instant magnetic switch!!!! If this doesn't help, contact me thru my website at ckgscale.com. Regards, Dennis.

Just glue a 1/2 inch button magnet to the tie, that is what PH hobbies sold.

LGB magnets snap into their track very nicely.

Just a note that the whistle and horn were offset from the center on production sound units and the bell was on the opposite side.

If I remember correctly, the bell was on the left and the whistle on the right, but if you turned the engine around, the sounds were backwards.

Remote control of the sounds would be better.
