i have an G scale DC layout in my back yard that has a loop at each end that is connected with a single track connecting the two loops. I know at a certain point i need to change the polarity coming out of the loops to get the train to run continuously around the layout. what is the best way to get this accomplished?
If you were running with DCC, an auto-reversing module would be the best option, but with straight DC control, a manual toggle switch is probably what you are going to need.
Check electronics parts stores in your area for a double-pole, double-throw toggle switch. It would be possible to wire both end loops to one toggle switch as long as the train will never be iin both at the same time.
The input wires from your power pack should go to the center terminals of the switch, and the wiring to the track connects to the end terminals in an "X" configuration.
I never understood why they called it a "WYES".
Think of it as a "TRIANGLE".
The wiring would make you think of going to battery power. Which has just as many limitations.
You will need to isolate the feed track to each switch. You will be changing polarity two times.
Wyes also limit the number of cars you can pull.
The maintenance factor increases greatly.
