Sharing with other clubs

Today we had a mixed scale collectors train club  picnic at our home.

I've know this club for over 18 years and used to be very active .

I had some of our local G club memebers coime and help run trains so I could act like a host. We also had a few new visitors come who wanted to see what the hobby is all about. 

 

All had a good time and lots of trains kept moving which is important during an open house.

 

The reason I'm sharing this with you is to encourage you G folks to mix it up with other scales.

We all have the same goal of promoting the hobby and why NOT have other scale clubs come visit. Its work, but its also helps our G members to remember that "we" aren't the only train hobbiest out there.

 

By keeping a broader  mindset and prospective , enables us to keep a good additude toward others in our club and around us at shows.

 

We are known as the FUN club at some shows.

I recently took your advice and joined the Wichita Toy Train Club [3-rail, S-scale].  A number of their members have visited during our Garden tour [the third Saturday in September] each year. At the recent Old Cowtown "Trails to Rails" festival, the Garden Rail and toy train clubs sharred an assembly hall for exhibits.

Our club does a few displays every year at train shows that cater mostly to the smaller scales. I often roam around and check check out the smaller scales club displays and try to chat up the members usually with not a lot of success. I was at one yesterday and saw some of the same folks I saw at another show two weeks ago without even a hint of recognition . Maybe there is a bit of jealousy there as our displays are ground level which makes it easier for the kids to see and we draw a bigger crowd.  I usually have more success with the younger members especially one yesterday who was showing me some pretty neat old O scale tin plate wind up trains.

We did have a big of competition from the kid hand crank train next door (which looked like too much fun) -

 

 

I took the new boxcab out for a maiden run. Its short train with hobo car was a big hit.

   I have moved to a new area and was approached by one of the executives of the local HO club to join their group as they cater to all scales. He asked me a little bit about myself and had also viewed my newly erected layout. After listening for a short time he told me that I didn't know what I was talking about and since a number of their members were railroad experts they would gladly set me straight. There were several women present and as a result he left my property unharmed. I only hope that this is an isolated incident when it comes to mixing scales in a club. I should mention that I am a retired autoworker/businessman. The businessman part of me kept quiet but the autoworker part wanted to just deck him. In life, you meet all kinds.

Don't you just love dealing with pompous arrogant _______ (fill in the blank with your choice). The vast majority of my stuff is 3 rail "O" with some N and HO packed away in the closet. I am now venturing into the world of garden rr'ng. Unfortunately there are some that feel, even in the world of 3railers, that everything has to be prototypical and scale. I have always believed that when they pay my expenses then they can critcize my operations. One of my pet peeves is that at a public venue shouldn't you try to exhibit what the visitors enjoy and less about what the operators would enjoy.
