Looking for a motor 12v that is water tight for use on a swing bridge.

Any ideas?

Found a remote controled tank (motor) on there that would allow me to open and close the swing bridge but still not water proof.

Think I will have to find a spec. motor for it to be water proof.

I was reading about LGB turn out coils in a old GR Mag and the effects of the moister on them I can think what it or a lot of rain would do to a stream with this type of bridge.

I don't think there are any waterproof dc motors...Inductive type AC motors like aquarium pumps, yes. dc, ???? It would interfere with cooling. However building a waterproof box to contain a regular motor shouldn't be all that hard

Why not follow prototype practice and put the motor in a water proof building and run a chain drive (or something similar) to the gearing mechanism of the bridge?  This will remote out your electrical components and protect them from harm.  That sounds a lot easier to me than trying to find a waterproof motor.  With this method you could use any DC motor, say one from a cooling fan off a junk car for example (already water resistant, but not water proof), and set up a simple pully system to open and close the bridge.

Just a thought......

All of the swing bridges in this area, except one , have bridge operator's enclouser on the side. this would give you a place to hide and mosture proof your motor with a gear drive. Note all of these are for auto's. We also have Lift and Bascule?? bridges. I just remembered one in the middel of SF bay south of Hayward Ca. it's alway's open. and I don't remember if it has a operators enclouser. Maybe one of the BAGRS members have picture they would share.

How about an older windshield wiper motor? they were water proof because they were mounted under the cowl in the weather.

Lowes and HD sell a number of waterproof electrical boxes in various sizes and shapes. Not sure why more folks don't use these.
