John,

I read your post last night and it brought to my mind a railroad I had visited in late September while in Colorado for a school. As I thought about it I was going to try and get you somewhat of a track layout that the Georgetown Loop Railroad used which was basically a spiral or helix (loop) where the train crossed from the mountain on one side to the mountain on the other side of the creek while dropping in elevation the whole time then the train crossed the creek again and continued on it's path to town. While trying to find a picture of the track layout I realized the things I had heard while I was in the area about the train not running there anymore have come to pass. But anyway at http://www.gtownloop.com/ you may find some information on the train. Also trying to get some contacts with http://www.georgetowncolorado.com/ you may be able to get ahold of some of the old brochures from the train as I recall there is a map of the track layout in it.

Grades are grades and they are a good thing, but I am slowly regretting having 4 % grades, particularly on curves but i had no choice due to lack of room.
