Gone Large Scale...for good...I think.
Posted by bman36 on Sunday, September 19, 2004 8:55 PM
Hey everybody,
This weekend in Winnipeg was our annual train show. All scales welcome. Had to work Saturday so only got to attend today. My wife was "Cleaning" and came across all my old HO stuff...all boxed up the other day. The inevitable occurred after a lengthy "discussion" [B)] Make a choice Brian..."G" or "HO". So I started singing "Let me sleep on it, baby baby, let me sleep on it, let me sleep on it...I'll give you an answer in the morning." Meatloaf would have been proud. Finally we were in a duet with Naomi chanting "So what's it gonna' be boy?!?!? G! or HO!??????. Just like the song a feeling came on over like a tidle wave...I swore it was "G" until the end of time! So now it's "G" until the end of time, it's a lot bigger and that's just fine.... and on and on went that stupid song in my head. Anyhow the point to this whole story. MOST of my HO (hee hee) was sold today at the show. Made $300 towards MORE LARGE SCALE! Singing a new tune now. It's all "G"ood. Yeah I'm nuts most days. Later eh...Brian. [8D] [;)] [:D]

The pain, the pain! I've only been "into" G-Scale for about a year and the bug has bitten really deep. G (or Fn3 for me) is the future of my model railroading hobby. Now if only I could give up some of my Lionel or HO stuff, I could easily buy that Accucraft live steam shay! But, parting ain't easy. Got my 1st Lionel for my 3rd BD in '45. Still have it, still runs. Then a GG-1 set in '58 and many bits and pieces over the years including every Fundimensions heavyweight ever offered (and I'm STILL buying that stuff!). When I go to the train store, they lock me in!

In High School got involved with HO (back then it was cool... sort of - I was also on the football team for insurance) and now, quite a few years later, have accumulated a nice collection of Pennsy Bowser stuff and lots of rolling stock (but no layout... yet).

So you can see, if I could only stand the pain, I could have a dream live steam garden railway... but I can't part with the Lionel's or the HO's. Besides I do have a small Lionel layout set up for my grandson (in the space reserved for the future? HO layout). Boy, I wish I could have my cake and eat it too!

Thank goodness my wife is so understanding. On the other hand, she always knows what I'm up to... trains!

Like I said earlier "MOST". Kept all my original stuff from when I was five and got started. That and a few collectors items I will display in my shop. Today I sold off all those unbuilt kits and rolling stock etc. Nice to see someone else excited about getting started or finding those "rare" items I had. Later eh...Brian.

PS; I forgot to mention that I also still have my AHM HOn30 trains and a stash of On30 stuff waiting for me to build layouts for them to live on.... if I live long enough.

Now there's a music video I'd love to make! I'm sure they'd let me shoot in Caboose Hobbies!

Paradise by the Dash-9 Lights
with sincere apologies to Meatloaf

boy
I remember every little thing
As if it happened only yesterday
Walking down the aisle
And there was not another railroader in sight
And I never held a loco
Looking any better than it did
And all the boys in the club
They were wishing they were me that night
And now the body was detailed and the colors were right
It never pulled so good, it never felt so right
And we're glowing like the railhead
as it's reflectin' the light
Glowing like the railhead as it's reflectin' the light
C'mon! Hold on tight!
C'mon! Hold on tight!
Though it's cold and lonely in the deep dark night
I can see paradise by the dash-9 light

girl
Ain't no doubt about it
We we could doublehead
Cause all the signals were green
"Highball" is what the dispatcher said

both
Ain't no doubt about it
Baby got to go and shout it
Ain't no doubt about it
We could doublehead

boy
Cause all the signals were green
"Highball" is what the dispatcher said
...

Okay, perhaps I should cut back on the caffiene late at night, but the muse was upon me.

Later,

My video team Collide Video can tape it and edit, etc... But do we use Bman or a stand in? [:D]

I cant say yea or nea just yet....

With my ever fluctuating layout, I cant say that one day I might eject the major part of my layout in favor of another scale like On30. I will always have G trains and at least a small switching layout to run on but I have to hedge my bets for now. I dig my big trains but the God's continue to conspire against me.

Kevin,
You are my hero!!! I've spent countless hours behind the wheel of an 18 wheeler re-writing songs. Most times I end up laughing so hard I can hardly steer. Stay clear of the "Very Big Mac" rolling across the prairies. So...when do we start??? This video will make model rr'ing history!!! Oh yeah I can see it now. No stand in needed...I'm up for it baby! OK OK relax I know. So now I got $300 to spend...yee haa. Gonna' order some pass. cars to be repainted for the L D & C Mountainview RR. Great deal on a set of four at St. Aubins by USA trains. Crazy here in the Great White North...that's me! Later eh...Brian.

Brian, I'm hoping to dump my AFlyer(the new in the box one) keeping Dad's though, at the next train show in hopes of rolling it into some motive power. Lgb 260 mogul. Does anyone know of a price guide for older ho stuff? I'd be willing to sell my childhood stuff.

Matt,
I could have got a lot more for all my stuff had I wanted to go the ebay route. I have an Athearn price guide here but that's it. My general feeling was to get it into people's hands so it could be used. I was happy with what I made that day. I even gave some away to the smiling youngsters that were with Mom and Dad. Made em' smile even bigger! After all it's only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. This way I had a great time meeting and talking with "newbies" and "veterans" alike on our love for trains. Even met some people who are ready to start a Large Scale association with me here! Big bonus. If you like you can email me a list of what you have. Can pretty much tell you where you stand. Later eh...Brian.

Brian, I'll have to go through the boxes and see what's there, the locos maybe worth somthing but I doubt the cars are. Would it be O.K. to E-mail some pictures of the locos? I do know one loco has rubber bands to drive the trucks and the other doesn't. The loco's are and I'm guessing late 70's early 80's as is the rolling stock. Did you rent booth space at the show?

Matt,
Send away buddy. Yeah it cost me 15 bucks for a table. Well worth it. Take some pics. If you have any product numbers or boxes let me know. Rubber band drive...sounds like early Athearn. I'll see what I can find. Later eh...Brian.

MK, I just got one of the Accucraft live-steam 3-cylinder Shays in about a month ago. Runs great, a very "user-friendly" engine! [:D] Converted mine to radio control & about to start construction on an outdoor layout (have had an indoor G layout, running mostly Bachmann geared locos, for the past 2 years). Bachmann's 1:20.3 logging engines tempted me back into model railroading after a 10-year lapse in the hobby - what they're doing in terms of detail level (rivals brass!) & running qualities vs. price is hard to beat. Tried a half-hearted effort a few years before doing a table-top N scale layout & ran into 2 problems: 1- my close-up eyesight, after 30+ years of work as an electronics tech, is not what it used to be when I had a large N scale layout in my 20's, & 2 - my pussycat Skippy thought N scale engines were MICE! As soon as I started running N scale, she would sit in the middle of the layout & DARE me to run something! She swatted a Con-cor Alco PA onto the floor once [}:)] - & got swatted by me for doing it! [B)] She has since discovered that getting in the path of G scale Climax is no fun! [:(] She's actually a pretty good pet, though - she now wanders carefully around the indoor G scale layout & will curl up in open space for a nap (well clear of the track!), snoozing regardless of the double-headed, Phoenix-sound equipped Bachmann Shays blasting up the 10% grade behind her! No, they are very different.

On2, On30, and On3 are all O scale: 1/4"=1'-0" but the track gauges are very different

Sn3 and On30 both use HO guage 16mm track BUT On30 is 1/4" scale, Sn3 is 3/16" scale. You see, a bit of difference scale wise.

On2 track is all handlaid as I dont know of any maker of 1/2" or 13mm track.

On30 uses 16mm HO track and there are specific makers of On30 scale track, Peco being the biggest. Micro-Engineering another.

On3 uses 3/4"or 19mm guage track and also has several suppliers.

Sn3 also has suppliers of ready made track but most use commercial HO rails and switch kits on handlaid track.

Check out this link: Everything you ever wanted to know about model train scales and guages and quite a bit you didnt want to know...
