OLD DAD
Posted by grandpopswalt on Sunday, May 9, 2004 11:51 PM
Gentlemen,

I recently had the pleasure to visit OLD DAD's home and layout. I feel compelled to tell you all that he's a fine gentleman, a great host, and a master modeller. Now I understand why his postings are always informative. We can all gain a lot from his input.

I've urged OLD DAD to write an article describing his method of building mountains using morter applied over a wire base. The result is beautiful and durable. And as far as I know the method is unique. This is certainly one technique we could all use somewhere on our layouts.

Hi Walt;

Thank you for the kind words; Susie and I enjoyed having you and your lovely wife, son & daughter-in-law over for an all too brief visit. We hope you guys will have time to get together when you come back this way in July.

Hay Brian;
We're looking forward to meeting you guys too; see you next week.

P.S. I am going to contact Mark H. to see if he would be interested in such an article for Garden Railways.

Larry,

If you need a testimonial about the need for such an article, please contact me. And I'm sure that after Brian sees the results of your work he'll also be a convert.

It was a great visit and we're looking forward to seeing you and Susie again in July (at which time I will have become the Grandpops of two).

I would like to do some of the mountains Larry makes, but lack the confidence to do same, I think it comes with getting older . There is already an article regarding a similar style in a Kalmback magazine somethimg to do with large scale model railways. However what larry does may be different and a bit better. I kow they are strong Iv'e seen a photo of a guy sitting on his mountain and it also shows that they are not as hard to get rif of if you should move

I think this is asimilar process the one they use for making boats out of ferro cement.

Regards Grandad Ian (11).

Hi guys,
On my way to the MWLSTS I had the pleasure of meeting Larry. This was definately a highlight for my buddy and I. Larry is a wonderful individual. His wife Sue took care of us with treats and Canadian coffee eh. Are those mugs still OK Larry? Larry's layout is awesome. Anyone who says they do not have enough room to set up very much need to see this. We wish we could have stayed longer but will definately return soon. Larry also showed us a layout built by Rod Eaton. Rod's work is also outstanding. Vic...you would love what he is building indoors. Rod and his wife have a beautiful yard and made us feel very welcome. There is a lot of talent here folks. Larry: from Curt and myself a huge THANKYOU for making it a memorable visit! Look forward to seeing you again. You are welcome here anytime. Later eh...Brian.

Hi
No need for mountains.
But the same method should work for mines tailings piles which I do need so I am also interested in how to make mortar mountains.
regards John

I have not personally been to OLD DAD's layout, but the pictures he sent me were AWSOME!!!!! Garden Railroads should definately do a feature on his layout!
