American Flyer couplers

I just bought two sets of "S" scale couplers by S-Helper Service Inc. because they looked like they would work for "G" scale. The quality is good and they seem to operate well and have a scale look to them. Their size is compairable to K-Ds smaller "G" scale coupler.

Anyone ever try these couplers? Will they hold up?

I dont think any of use have tried this. The only thing I can suggest is to try it and keep an eye on it and see how they perform over time. Are they plastic? they might not be UV resisitant. Metal? Corrosion due to exposure? I Dunno ?...

Ya, they are plastic with no mention on the packaging about UV resistance. I think I'll paint one set and leave the other bare plastic then see how they do over the summer.
I'll post the results in the fall for anyone who may be interested.

I for one will be interested in seeing what comes of it. Question though....what made you try them in the first place? Did not care for what else was out there or just experimenting? Enquiring minds want to know. Later eh...Brian.

I'm always interested in trying a new way of doing a given thing. To me "status quo" is just too limiting so I bought the "S" scale couplers as an experiment. They cost $3.95 (US) a pair with draft gear box (cheaper than K-D .... more reliable than Bachmann etc. etc.). A long shank style is also available without draft gear box for $2.95 a pair.
If these couplers work out I will sell the few K-Ds I have and junk or give away all my other coupler brands.

What brand are the S scale couplers? Also I think you have me confused with someone else. I have not ever posted on the TRAINS forum. Must be another Brian. Were ya' takin' a bashing over there? S-Helper Service Inc. is the name of the coupler co.

The Brian over on the TRAINS forum also lived in Canada.
Yes, I was taking a bashing over there, I won't be going back to that bunch.

Thanks for the info. Do they have a web site? Sorry to hear of what went on at the forum. We seem to have a smaller but much more tame group here. I too have walked away from all the other forums I have been on. The bantering and bashing is just too childish for me. Like the group here though. Good bunch. Wa'happened on the TRAINS magazine forum, I'm fairly active there but I didnt read anything, there are some real hammerheads over there but most members are pretty good bunch. Are we talking about the same forum?

Bman36, Old Dad, Vsmith, Check out www.showcaselines.com they are an S-helper service web site, cool stuff I into "S" on the inside. Maybe check out www.Americanmodels.com as well. What about using an AF knuckle coupler they can use an electo magnetic uncoupler instead of the ramp type I've seen for the large scale stuff?

Carpenter matt An Af knuckle coupler is closer to G. I think Old dad was looking at a replacement ( aftermarket Af coupler) rather than an "S" scale coupler
