Lionel 072 switch question.
Posted by magicman710 on Friday, July 6, 2007 12:25 PM

I've heard everywhere that modern 072 switches are a pain, such as "the blades dont close tightly" and "my large scale engines run and bang into them, and the plastic bases are often warped". And Frank said they were finicky. Is all this true? Are they really junk being sold for $110 retail price?

Thanks,

Grayson

Try the prewar 711 switches, their great and work well.I rather drop my cash on these than the newer junk they make now....tony

I have three, and mostly they stink. I am exiling them from my layout. If I build a larger one I will put them in yard where they will be effectively harmless.

I have quite a number of them. They occasionally exhibit the problems described by others, but for the most part (meaning the vast majority of the time) I have very little problem with them, no more than with my O-22's both old and new.

I wish I could talk with autority about old O72s, but I've never owned any.

After defending them the other day I had a problem with one yesterday when I tried to replace the bulb and a socket shorted out.  I hope I can fix it, but won't know for sure until I take it out and look into it and hope that I don't have to fabricate some part or another.
