Didn't hear about the stuck brake shoe fires on the news down here, maybe the trains need to go back to the caboose system where a couple of men are in the caboose to spot axle fires on the train cars.  Don't think it would be that much extra cost to haul a caboose with modern engines.

Did see the S.C. Furniture Store fire, what a disaster and unfortionate thing to happen to those nine firefighters!

A&Y ry, let me just add to the comment about General Sherman-he had NO respect for religious buildings as that is where he put his unit's horses overnight in Savannah GA.

General "Buckeye" Tecumsesh Sherman and his carpetbagger troops performed scorched earth urban renewal in Atlanta and its approaches during 1865. They set the right-of-way fires with crossties so they could heat the rails on Southern railroads and bend them around trees. It took awhile, but Southern RRs finally recovered and got control of the poorly managed Yankee railroads via CSX and NS.

All of this eventually and unfortunately led to a massive migration of Yankees to Atlanta and environs and things have never been normal since-----primarily because the production and sale of Grits increased tenfold as Yanks became addicted to them. Prior to that time Grits were only produced from Yankee corn in the grain mills of Northeastern Ohio.[my Grandpa had a mill near Dennison].

Cheif, are you sure that you don't mean add a few thousand tons of sand to keep the condominium from falling into the ocean like here in Palm Beach FL on Singer Island?  This is not the first time that extra sand had to be brought in.

I don't see why anybody with a half a brain would buy a condo right on the ocean!

laz57 - There is an advantage to living in Georgia...you can actually count to 11 with just two hands...

...and the Yanks probably would have left Sumter if the Rebs had actually hit someone.

I knew that grits was a "coagulate"  ( To cause transformation of (a liquid to a solid, for example: into or as if into a soft, semisolid, or solid mass.)  But, I didn't realize they were also combustable.

I'm going to go see what's happening with the brewery.

That was the breaking news on local TV last night at 6PM.  I bet it was CSX!!!!! Shock [:O]

I remember when I was a fireman and the NW would come through the fire district during the summer when it was dry and hot boxes would "strow" fire all down the tracks.  I put a truck on the tracks one hot afternoon.  Called "Central" and told them to hold all trains.  Guess What?  We had the authority to do that.  At a fire scene, the officer in charge can "stop the world" if he needs too.
