Man crushed to death by Layout

June 10, 2007 - 9:24AM

A 51-year-old man was crushed to death when his layout collapsed and fell on him as it was being constructed on sunday morning.

The incident happened at about 8.20am (EST) in his home near Reading Pa.

WorkSafe spokesman frank53 said the benchwork that was used to construct the layout was not sufficently constructed to support the weight of the solid rail track that was used.

"The layout has fallen and the man was struck," Frank53 said.

Frank53 said people were urged to not use solid rail track as this heavy material could pose a threat. Frank53 also said that people were urged to use only tubuler track, as its lighter weight and superior performance pose no health risks.

He said another crushing incident had occurred on May 19 in West Reading, where 10 pieces of solid rail track killed a man as he worked.

The man was unloading his car when he slipped and was crushed by the track.

Frank53 said 10 people had now lost their lives working with solid rail track, twice the number of deaths since the same time last year.                Big Smile [:D]

What a crushing blow to our solid rail community !!  There should be more Federal mandated guidelines & rules against this type of solid rail use on layouts!!  I wonder if investigator Frank53 has done a true & unbiased investigation on this horriffic accident !! I'm inclined to think that he has !! I'm so glad I use Gargraves hollow, flexible, lightweight, though heavy wooden tie, track on my layout !! Though, I do have one piece of 027 track !!

Please let us know if any more breaking news on this accident comes !! Laugh [(-D] Laugh [(-D]

Thanks, John

Where are the STATE TRACK INSPECTORS?  Oh thats right they were in OHIO inspecting the ROGERS CORNERS big layout and probably had one too many.  INSANITY!

I hope this wasn't Euler Buckling.

Was there any mention if the layout was an inter-modal?  If so, the proper agency will probably try and deflect public opinion to some other cause.
