Now I'm not to framiliar with MTH (Lionel person myself). But its sounds like something wrong with the sound system(Protosounds?) and the reversing unit. Open the tender and see whats inside, such as something that looks burt, or find the scource of the smell. I wouldent send to it to MTH again, take it to a local service station for MTH.
Good Luck with your engine.

I don't like to bash anyone for anything, let me preface this writing with that statement so no one gets the wrong idea. I have a question however.
I bought from an MTH dealer, a brand new tin plate blue Comet 263 proto 2. It didn't work well, very little sound, would not reverse, etc. So I returned it to MTH a few months ago and received it back in the mail yesterday. It's worse now than before. No sound at all, erratic speed and still no reversing plus some really foul smell coming from the tender I think. Anyone have any similar problems? Just wondered, Jake
