Bing Miniature Train

I have a very old set that was my fathers.  I believe it is circular 1910.  He told me he was about 5 when he recived this as a Christmas gift from his mother.  The track is a 3-rail it is electric with a transformer marked Jefferson Toy Company.  There is an engine and three passenger cars, one is different for the other two, I assume like a deluxe car.  I have the original owners book also.  Any idea if this is worth anything?

 

 

 

 

 

 Any information would be appreciated.  I have another set from my father, it is a newer train by maybe 5-7 years if memory serves me correct, not as nicely made and has no trade mark stamping on it.

Very nice set. Bing trains are very collectible. You can look it up on e-bay to compare with what you have. I think the engine is missing some wheels. The passenger car that is different is called the observation car. In its present condition I would say your train is worth $150-200, maybe more. The engine looks to be in really nice condition. I dont know how readily available the missing wheels are to find. Nice set to display on a shelf. Thanks for sharing.

I looked at the engine and it appears to only have a place for 4 wheels - on either side of the motor.  It desn't appear to be missing any, but kinda strange as the cars all have 8 wheels.  I'll start thinking about displaying the set.  Thank you for looking.

If you decide to run your set be sure to have the transformer checked out by a knowledgable repair person.  They can lube train at the same time.

Thank you so much for your interest and replies. 

I don't think I will try and run the set.  It has been stored in its wooden box in the rafters for many many years.  I ran across it when closing the old homestead over a year ago - a real delight to fine as I had assume from my mother it was gone.  I hadn't seen the set in well over 30 years.  I've been slowly getting though all the packed boxes and recently found it again... now its housed in the spare bedroom lol

I think I will now focus on displaying it on a wall, or better yet perhaps inside a case.  It of course has great sentimental value to me and I think my Dad would be amused and pleased for me to do so.

   Yours is the larger of two cast iron 0-4-0 electric outline locomotives made by Bing and exported to the U.S.  The engine and the cars were made virtually without change between 1914 and 1926.  The track included in your pictures is for controlling the train - usually battery power.  The engine itself is missing one pantograph but otherwise appears to be complete.
