Dream Plan Build DVD Series
Posted by mistyk11 on Tuesday, May 15, 2007 8:51 PM

I'd really like to thank the folks at CTT for sending me this dvd series- NOT! My son got a hold of it and there will be no peace in this household until we start making MORE mountains, trees, bushes, etc. He's decided that we too need to have the 3000 sq ft + layout (thats bigger than our house!). I would like to say that even though this is the first dvd we have received, it has already helped tremendously in showing how to make trees using the ground foam and the mountains.

Now, my question is, where the heck do we find this ground foam or is it something that we can easily make? If so, can someone point me to which type of foam to buy and where can I find it? My son decided that we needed to purchase this dvd so he offered to pay half for it, which I secretly put away in a "train" fund that he doesn't know about. We'll use it to help pay for supplies or perhaps those Union Pacific locomotives we are keeping an eye on!

You know Zeke, I'm sure they have to have it on one of the websites here. It is published by Kalmbach publishing. I just subscribed to the CTT magazine last month and they sent it automatically but I'm sure there is a way to purchase it. I believe it is 9.95 which isn't bad. I really like the scenery lessons in it. That was where I was having the most problems with and this dvd guides you right through it, and it's real easy steps too.

I was skeptical about the dvd, which I, too received last Friday. I was tempted to just send it back. I'm glad I unwrapped and watched it. I enjoyed the scenery how-tos, but I also enjoyed the real-life tours of the UP yard and other features. Well worth the $10 in my opinion.

Terry, I too was just going to send it back but my son saw it and wanted to see what it had in it. I'm glad we did. He had never really seen any big layouts other than what I found on the internet and once he saw the dvd, his eyes just lit up! Plus, the collectors coin that came with it was all he needed in order to hand over his half of the money for it. I think the neatest "new" thing was seeing those little railroad speeders. Now he wants to find one for his set!

I started getting the series a while ago.  I also thought it was a nice dvd for $9.95...I got sucked in.  The next 6 are very nice also but, the price becomes $26.10.  Ouch...

I spent too much for six of those dvds.  ($156.60)Banged Head [banghead]

Yeah, that figures....if they kept them at the $9.95 price, they'd be great. At $26.10, that's a little too much for me. Thanks for the heads up on it.

Overall, not worth the $$$$ unless you are HO.  Ends up just a sprinkling of O.  some good suggestions on some scenery.  Price goes up as you go along.  Too much Model Railroader involvement.

Unfortunately $19.95 is the going rate for a $1.00 DVD!

I've no idea what the production costs are so that could explain the high price, it isn't like these are Hollywood Movies that have been in the box office for 8 weeks and have already pulled in $100,000,000.00 in ticket sales.  So they have to make money somehow. Wink [;)]

I wish they had said how many DVDs are in the 'set' that way I know what I'm getting myself into if I don't return it.  Wife watched it with me... there were a few 'that's cool, you should do that on your layout' comments.

Yes, I noticed the HO connection. I was looking mostly for help with scenery since I'm not really that crafty and it did help with the basic mountain making and trees. I told him that when we get the next one, we'll decide if there is any reason that we need to keep it. I'm sure I could convince him that we can find something else to spend the money on for his train set.

Ok, so back to my main question: Can anyone tell me where to find the ground foam or what type of foam do I use to grind up to make the trees they showed in the video?

Your local hobby shop should have it or go to walthers.com and search "ground foam."

I sent mine back.  didn't like the sales tactic.  I don't like being pressure-sold on anything.  If they want to give me a tease dvd w/ snippets for free on the hopes of me buying the dvd on my own, that's ok, but I HATE this kind of keep it or you have to send back when I didn't want it in the first place.  I expect classier customer service from CTT and their organization.
