I just bought a 1034 transformer that seems to be in pretty good shape. I replaced the cord, just to be safe. I did not test it prior to replacing the cord. The variable control is not acting correctly. As you move it from low to high, it shoots up to about 12 volts and then declines to zero as you move the speed up. The fixed posts register fine. Anyone have any suggestions?

I may be misreading what you've typed, but it almost sounds like you're thinking the throttle should work opposite of what it does.
If I remember correctly, the 1034 looks identical to a 1033 (minus the direction lever), and that the throttle would be positioned left and right at 0 volts and up and down at max volts. I'm using a 1033 to temporarily power a very small layout, and still think that the throttle is backwards. When you push the throttle up, the speed goes down.
Of course, this may or may not be true with the 1034.
