Lionel Target set

nice to see another cali member.......i was actually looking for the target set and found the hp set...now my gf son wants it so it will be added to my layout i am sure....

My son's set did come with the Fastrack loop- 40x60" but only came with the Powermaster transformer which is 30 watts. I believe that was probably because it is one of the true starter sets (lower end) however is perfect for the younger ones to run. My sister tells me she got off fairly cheap in buying the set for him since it has been me that has spent a small fortune adding on to it. The best part of the whole train idea is that he is using his imagination to add on to it and learning to make his own scenery. However, he now has his eyes on the new Harry Potter set coming out in the fall.......

Oh I blame my sister on starting this one! My son has decided he is going to start saving his aluminum can recycling money for the new Harry Potter set (he's watching the 1st Harry Potter on DVD and fell in love with the Hogwarts Express train!)....it can certainly be a money pit but we are loving it. If I could get a set to start with, it would have to be one of the Santa Fe premium sets- the catalog shows it is a U28CG....it is what I grew up seeing locally here in Southern California, along with Union Pacific trains. We live close enough to some tracks that we look out our back window and see them both running and all my kids just love them! This set is definitely a grown up starter set since it starts at $769.99.....beautiful set but way out of my price range! We'll stick with the Target and Harry Potter sets for now!

Zeke - try any Lionel dealer for the 2007 cat. or look at lionel.com.  There are starter sets at out store for, I think, under $200 (when discounted off list) and on up.  If I remember correctly they come with the new CW-80 and a loop of Fastrack.

It is different from Lionel's customary starter sets. Comes with a bunch of extra items in it (not normally included in their starter sets) and is packaged in a cube-shaped box designed for storing the set, and which I feel is the way all starter sets should be packaged because it's far more convenient to store.

My son's set came with everything necessary to get it started - the track, transformer, plastic mat, etc (probably why they call them ready to run, huh!). We put the mat away as soon as we built the table since we didn't want to put holes in it. The next thing I did was buy a new transformer since the one that comes with it is only a 30 watt. It runs the set and track that comes with it fine but not a lot of juice left over to run extra cars, lights, etc. We bought more track however his is only on a 8x4 table so we took some of the track down so he could have room to run his trucks and other vehicles on the board. We will be expanding the size in a couple of months (I've kinda gotten hooked on this train thing!) I don't know what other sets come with but when my sister bought him this set, we opened it up and it had everything in it to make a 7 yr old very happy!

just wondering if the set was worth the money? I wouldnt mind picking up a complete rtr set

My son has the Target Lionel set and he loves it! I still see it occasionally at the local Target stores. If not there, I've also seen it on the Target website. Good luck finding it. We've been having a blast with it! (along with spending more money on accessories, etc.)

Does anyone happen to know any place that might be re-selling the Lionel Target set? (other than Ebay).

I'm hoping to start an interest in my Godson by purchasing him a beginner set for his birthday and was interested in the Target set, only because it came with so many extra's. Thanks,
