P/U Roller removal

I hoped that someone would have picked up on this.

You might try Lionel for more information.  Their Tech staff is not in until Wednesday.  You can reach them thru the customer service tab on the Lionel site.

I did check on the parts, and the roller pick-up ($3.10ea) and insulation ($.50ea) are available thru Lionel.

I was able to pry it out but I cracked the plastic frame around the piece a little, though not cracked all the way.  Is it still usable?  All I want to do is resolder the wire but there is a little stem that the wire goes into on the assembly thatv doesn't leave any room to solder.  Does a new piece come with a wire already attached??                                         Thanks- Brian

Is it possible that someone glued some of the parts together? Check for any excess CA glue or the like. In any event, a little careful wiggling and prying should pop it out, but if a capable adhesive was used, getting the assembly apart without destroying it may be difficult. Frankly, I think kpolak's idea of a little bit of melting of the plastic is more likely than glue.

Note, based on my experience with similar but not identical pickup assemblies: one critical element is the insulating washer (#600-2333-042) that goes under the head of the screw  as you can see from the exploded view. Without it, on some collectors at least, you get a direct short circuit from the middle rail to the "ground" side of the locomotive.

Kurt, looks like you have a different animal there.  Trainbrain there may be more to it than just the one screw; unfortunately I'm unfamiliar with your collector configuration.

Here's what mine looks like apart.  The black plastic collector insulation may be stuck to the truck, and collector causing it to stick.

Mine was melted a bit next to the wire lead, probably die to a previous oversize solder joint too close to the truck.

Here is a picture of the motor pick up roller assembly. Note the hole is where I removed the screw but the assembly still remains tightly intact. How can I get ths out?

It will be mounted with a plastic insulator.

Gently pry the P/U away from the truck.

PW roller units should separate from the truck with one screw.

I guess my ? should pertain to the whole assembly, including the collector frame, arm, spring & roller.  I removed a screw thinking the whole assembly would drop out but nothing is loose.  I need to get to the point where the wire is so I can resolder it.  How do I get the whole assembly out without killing it?  Pry it with a screwdriver?  I  dunno.

The actual roller it self is peened to the collector arm. You would need to grind off one end of the roller pin, drive it out, then replace pin and roller and peen over each roller pin end.

You could also replace the whole P/U assembly with a like unit. Some come with wires attached.

Is it this hard to do?  I removed the screw from my Railsounds GP9 p/u roller and it's still in pretty good.  Will prying do it or destroy it?  I need to solder the wire back and can't find the connection without getting the roller out.  I don't want to wreck it.
