Thanks guys. I have seen several originally owned 681s and it looks like most of the have the white lettering. I don't think it is people switching shells around- just Lionel being cheap and using up every shell they had.
After looking atround for sometime it seems like only a 671 2671W tender comes with silver lettering.
I posed this question also a while back. I have a 681 with white 2671 tender lettering. Seems like some are silver and some are white. I remember David Doyle on TTML telling me when I posted this question that both version exist. He didn't know if one was more original or not being that a lot could have happened in 60 years.

I do have the older version with the silver paint. Really like it, but it needs some TLC to be back in shape.

I know the 671 turbine had this tender 1948-49 and the 681 had it 1950-51. Does anyone know if the 1950-51 version came with white lettering?
I believe it was the 1948-49 version of this tender that came with the silver lettering.
I am talking about the tender and not the engine.
Post some variations that you guys have seen or own.
Thanks,
John
