Lionel 072 Switches
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, April 5, 2007 10:06 PM
Hello this is our first time posting on this forum and we wanted to give it a try. And our first inquiry is why do the new Lionel switches (072) sit so much higher than the O Gauge Track that they are attached to is there a reason for this or is there somthing else that i need to correct it. We had purchased six of these and pointed four of them in toward each other and conecting to a 45 degree crossover to create a double slip switch and when one of our heavier locomotives crosses it-it looks like its on a roller coaster is there anything we can do short of placing shims under the surounding track

I noticed the same thing.  Not just with modern O72 switches, but with prewar 711 O72 switches, as well.  My guess was that O-gauge track was higher in prewar days and the height of switches never changed.  I, too, would appreciate more information.

I haven't found any solution except to shim the track near the switch.  Takes about 1/16 inch.

Thank you for your reply i think your right that is what were going to have to do. I think i will have to spend some time and do it in such a way as to make it so that i can shim the ties so that the shims will not be seen and maybe with a little trial & error slowly work them down to the table again.  And now that i think about it-it will probably take quite a bit of time
